COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shelter Soulmates, a monthly column, shows three dogs and one cat from shelters and 501(c)(3) rescue groups—each available for adoption—inviting local families to offer them a home.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Local supporters will gather at the Priory on the North Side on Aug. 24 to fundraise for rebuilding Riley's, a Carnegie pub that burned to the ground on Nov. 14—featuring Celtic bands, a belly dancer and a complimentary buffet—and strong ticket sales indicate community backing. Owners plan to rebuild with an expanded kitchen and new sprinkler system while engineers finalize updated designs, though reopening will occur only when quality and safety are assured.  NEXTpittsburgh

CRIME NEWS

  • Police investigated a social media video from August 13 that showed individuals attaching mice to fireworks with duct tape and igniting them—resulting in the animals being killed on the 410 block of Mt. Pleasant Road in Northview while evidence was gathered and a search warrant executed with one person taken into custody on unrelated charges.  WTAE
  • Pittsburgh Police are investigating videos from last Wednesday that show someone taping mice to fireworks with duct tape and igniting them to kill the animals, and a man was arrested on unrelated charges from the 410 block of Mt. Pleasant Road + detectives gathered tape, fireworks remnants and CCTV footage while questioning witnesses.  KDKA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After decades of delays, ALCOSAN has opened bids for a wastewater project that will build a 3.8-mile tunnel under the Allegheny and Ohio rivers — a phase costing about $800 million and set to start early next year. Pittsburgh residents will see their bills rise as part of the overall $3.5 billion public works project — the largest in the region’s history.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors and first responders warn that a new drug mix called Flysky—linked to rising overdoses—is affecting residents in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Butler and Fayette counties. UPMC expert Dr. Mohamed Hagahmed said medetomidine combined with fentanyl and heroin does not respond to Narcan and withdrawal can lead to severe symptoms.  WTAE

  • Excitement grows in Pittsburgh as Pitt and Duquesne will play at Acrisure Stadium on Aug. 30 during Pittsburgh Day—this historic game marks their first meeting in 86 years and will include fan events like a special rally towel and tailgating.  WPXI
