  • Animal Friends reminded pet owners to keep their pets safe during an incoming heat wave — the shelter urged precautions as rising temperatures can pose an overheating risk. The advisory aims to protect local animals during warmer weather.  WPXI
  • The Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department is collecting cleaning supplies and recruiting volunteers to help West Virginia flood victims who suffered heavy rains and flash flooding — they need items like water and Gatorade-type drinks to support hydration during cleanup. Volunteers will gather today at 9 a.m. at West Alexander Fairgrounds and depart at 9:30 a.m. to aid the effort.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was shot early Saturday in Lincoln-Lemington and is in critical condition, police said — officers arrived just before 1:30 a.m.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Two people were hurt in a late-night shooting in Swissvale — police said one victim was shot in the back while in a vehicle and the other was injured in a fall while fleeing.  WPXI

  • The Grand Jubilee Parade was held in Pittsburgh on Saturday, June 21 – the third day of Juneteenth celebrations.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight distinguished alumni from Valley High and its predecessor schools will be honored at the homecoming football game on Sept. 26 as part of the New Kensington-Arnold School District’s distinguished alumni class, announced by School Director Sarah Yurga. The honorees, chosen from ten nominations, include a conservationist + a military leader + a photojournalist + a chaplain + an educator and coach + a doctor researching neurodegeneration + a special education director + a bioengineering scholar.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allegheny County Jail and local shelter Animal Friends launched TAILS, a pilot program pairing shelter dogs with incarcerated women who learn pet care skills when Ethel, a 2-year-old 38-pound mixed breed, joined the unit on June 11. The program aims to build skills and boost morale and may expand to include more dogs if it proves successful — jail and shelter staff guide training.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Today, more than two dozen Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus routes start using updated stops and new schedules as part of a regular service improvement rollout; four downtown routes will follow a permanent Bus Rapid Transit alignment that adds five new stations — Ross Street, William Penn, Market Square, Wood Street, and Steel Plaza.  WPXI
