  • Pittsburgh’s anti-violence program collected hundreds of donated items on Dec. 10 to assist seniors and people experiencing homelessness (a continuing community project) as part of its ongoing support for local residents.  WPXI

  • Horizon Market opened on Wednesday afternoon on Seventh Street in New Kensington and now offers local residents an accessible affordable grocery option after nearby closures left few choices. Entrepreneurs Brianna Thorpe and Cameron Yockey plan a third location in Natrona Heights Village within the next six months.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Duquesne University is building an 80,000 sqft health sciences facility on Forbes Avenue at Magee Street in the Bluff neighborhood that will house the John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences. The building will open in fall 2028 and aims to consolidate programs and boost collaboration among health disciplines.  WTAE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report shows Pittsburgh’s air quality has improved (from its industrial history). Local data indicates the air may now rank among the nation’s cleanest.  CBS Pittsburgh

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local lawmakers celebrated a $5M boost for public libraries at Northland Library in McCandless Township on Friday, with the state budget covering 2025 — 2026 reflecting a 7.1% increase. They joined library association representatives to support community resources.  WPXI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at UPMC Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh voiced concerns over a new federal plan that will limit nursing degree forgiveness to $20,000 a year and may worsen the state’s shortage. The rule will take effect in July in Allegheny, and nurses warn longer emergency waits could follow.  WTAE

  • Former Steelers receiver Steven Sims has signed with the Cardinals on their practice squad after a tryout — known for his punt returning skills — and he will try to earn a spot on the team before the season ends.  PennLive
  • The Pirates landed the pop 5 pick in Tuesday night’s MLB Draft Lottery with the third-best odds to secure the No. 1 pick + putting them in a strong position for upcoming moves in the draft order.  WPXI
