COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army has begun its 2025 Red Kettle Campaign on Nov. 17 and raised $652,495 of a $2,303,000 goal in 28 counties (including $154,419 from Allegheny County); the organization plans to boost donations by Christmas Eve to assist families facing holiday hardships.  WPXI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Waymo began manual operations in downtown Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Dec. 3, with its 5th and 6th generation vehicles to validate its self-driving technology before a planned public launch (a nod to the city’s role in autonomous vehicle history through Carnegie Mellon connections).  WPXI

  • Pittsburgh hosts a busy weekend with an awards dinner at Station Square today, comic conventions at Monroeville, and craft fairs and holiday shows at local venues through Dec. 7 - offering festive art, music and community gatherings for all ages.  NEXTpittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its Tuesday meeting in Nordy's Place, the Student Government Board raised student worker wages, setting a new minimum of $10 per hour starting Jan. 23 and increasing weekly hours from 20 to 25 while also announcing that two committee chairs will leave with replacements coming in spring.  The Pitt News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pitt researchers received up to $41.5 million from ARPA-H to develop the Robotic Assisted Mobility and Manipulation Platform (RAMMP) that uses AI and robotics to enhance wheelchair mobility and empower disabled individuals to perform everyday tasks with greater independence; the project will foster collaboration among local experts and industry partners.  The Pitt News
  • Cheese sold at local Target, Aldi, and Walmart was recalled by the FDA due to possible metal fragments; the recall, upgraded on Dec. 1, affects 1.5M bags and advises customers to discard the product or return it for a refund.  WPXI

  • The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are USL champions and the city will honor them with a rally today on Grant Street outside the City-County Building from noon to 1 p.m. Fans may take photos with the team and trophy from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. while the street is closed from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WTAE
  • Following a season-worst loss to the Bills, head coach Mike Tomlin said he planned no coaching staff changes, keeping the Steelers intact. He noted that adjustments might be considered after the game with the Ravens.  PennLive
  • Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman L.C. Greenwood is a finalist for the 2026 Hall of Fame Seniors category—the furthest he has advanced after 40 years of eligibility. The former Pro Bowler—known for 78 career sacks—made it further this year than last year.  PennLive
  • Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin podcast that a fresh start may be best for coach Mike Tomlin as fans voiced frustration during the loss to the Bills and he floated the idea of Tomlin taking over Penn State's program.  CBS Pittsburgh
