  • WPXI's 11 Cares and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank started a fundraiser two weeks ago to help families facing food insecurity during the government shutdown—$2,000 raised by Friday has provided more than 6,000 meals. The food bank still meets high demand as it serves nearly 300,000 families across 11 counties while the holiday season nears.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Faith leaders dedicated the world’s only authorized replica of the Vatican nativity scene Friday at the plaza outside the U.S. Steel Tower downtown—local unions worked for four weeks to put it together and a student choir filled the air with Christmas carols.   • VisitPITTSBURGH and the Heinz History Center opened a new welcome center on the first floor of the Smithsonian-affiliated History Center near downtown spots like the Strip District. Tourism will grow as the city prepares for events including the NFL Draft and major celebrations in 2026.  WPXI

  • Anthony Delitto started as a physical therapy student and rose through teaching and leadership to become a dean and associate provost for digital education at Pitt. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An arborist from Boscage Tree Service found a ganoderma mushroom on the Cathedral of Learning lawn on Nov. 18, which signals deep decay in the tree; Pitt is using advanced tools like the IML-RESI drill and sonic tomography—tests that guide plans to remove unsafe trees over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks for campus safety.  University Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allegheny County’s Regional Asset District Board budget for next year will allocate a record $56 million from the 1% sales tax for parks and trails as part of its $148 million plan. County parks will get about $30 million in operating grants plus $9.5 million for upgrades, while Pittsburgh parks will receive nearly $11 million in operations and $2.5 million for capital projects — additional funds cover security and improvements at local attractions.  KDKA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Earflo device is a sippy cup that helps clear ear fluid in children and may lower the need for surgery; it was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Best Inventions of 2025 and is now in clinical trials at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Peter Santa Maria said he and his team hope to gain FDA approval—so the cup will be sold in early 2026.  WTAE
