  • Chris Beers, founder of Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop, opened his first store in the Strip District in 2012 and now runs 20 locations including six in Pittsburgh. He said his company will expand by adding 75 to 100 new stores over the next five years.  WPXI
  • Bricks & Minifigs, a resale chain for new, used and retired LEGO pieces, will open its first Pittsburgh-area store in Zelienople on November 22—local fans can buy, sell and trade their favorite LEGO items in the new shop.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pittsburgh locals have a busy weekend with the Record Convention Fall Show on Saturday at West View Banquet Hall, a classical piano and fashion event at CAVO also on Saturday, a world premiere adaptation of Little Women at City Theatre running Friday through Sunday, and a two-night comedy show by Steve Martin and Martin Short at the Benedum Center. Additionally, GaysGiving will take place on Sunday at COhatch South Side Works for a community meal and activities — each event offers a unique way for residents to celebrate the season.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Elizabeth Forward School District board approved phase two of high school construction — a move that brings major rearrangements to the project — as the district updates its plans for the school.  CBS Pittsburgh

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PA Turnpike officials predicted over 3.4 million travelers will use the highway for Thanksgiving and said drivers should plan ahead since all construction and maintenance work will stop from 5 a.m. on Nov. 25 to 11 p.m. on Nov. 30 + extra personnel and state police will be deployed on the route.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Masala House Indian Bistro on Baum Boulevard was hit with a Consumer Alert after an inspection on Wednesday afternoon found four violations — including rodent and pest infestations. The restaurant must boost pest control to bi-weekly and clean up all issues within 10 days — or it will be ordered to close.  KDKA
  • Allegheny County fire officials demonstrated the hazards of frying a partially frozen turkey when it was lowered into hot oil, which quickly ignited. They warned families to use a meat thermometer and fry outdoors to prevent fires—key safety advice for Thanksgiving.  WTAE

  • Alex Highsmith of the Pittsburgh Steelers skipped practice last week and this week due to a new pec injury that may cause him to miss another game — a setback after recording two sacks in each of his previous games.
