EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt announced Friday that Michael Rees—a Pitt graduate from Upper Saint Clair—gave $30M to start the Rees-Chancellor’s Scholars Program at the Frederick Honors College to fund full scholarships covering room, board and tuition for 64 first-year students. The program will add 16 new students each year starting in 2027-2028.  WPXI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monongahela Incline remains closed as Pittsburgh Regional Transit finalizes a report for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and PennDOT’s State Safety Oversight Agency after a motor-controller failure on November 1 trapped 27 riders. PRT will begin inspections and plan to reopen the incline next week while operating shuttle vans and Route 40 service for commuters — a third-party inspector found no mechanical issues this week.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Senator John Fetterman fell during an early morning walk near his home in Braddock on Thursday and suffered a ventricular fibrillation flare-up that required 20 stitches—after two days in a Pittsburgh hospital, he is now home with his family and will return to Washington soon.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspectors in Shadyside found roaches, roach droppings, and rodent droppings in Kung Fu Chicken’s kitchen on Bellefonte Street—11 violations were noted with two high-risk for foodborne illness. The restaurant must complete pest control, deep cleaning, and repairs before its reinspection in 10 days to avoid closure.  WPXI

  • Pitt fans lined up on the North Shore at Acrisure Stadium as early as 6 a.m. for College Gameday—an event marking its return—and they await the game against Notre Dame today.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Central Catholic won the Class 6A title over North Allegheny behind Roman Thompson's three touchdowns — the victory capped a strong season start for the team.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • WalletHub released a report comparing nearly 400 cities on 50 sports metrics—its analysis placed Pittsburgh third and highlighted that two Pennsylvania cities made the top 10 list. The report also noted strong sports cultures in cities like Boston, Los Angeles, and New York—showing the broad appeal of professional and college sports.  KDKA
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers have promoted linebacker Mark Robinson from the practice squad to the active roster for today’s game against the Bengals. Robinson joined the team in 2022 after being drafted in the seventh round and will add depth on special teams — he previously was with the Patriots and Jets.  PennLive
  • On game day, the 22nd-ranked Pitt Panthers took on No. 9 Notre Dame on the North Shore while both teams held 7-2 records. Freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel made his sixth start and running back Desmond Reid returned from injury as Pitt looked to build on its five-game win streak.  WPXI
