COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today a 40-foot Norway Spruce Christmas tree is being delivered from Leslie Park in Lawrenceville to the City-County Building in Downtown, and drivers must expect traffic delays along Butler, 46th, 62nd and Grant streets from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. as the city prepares for a tree lighting ceremony on November 22 at 5 p.m.  KDKA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paul McCartney, 83, performed at PPG Paints Arena on November 11 in front of 19,000 fans during his Got Back tour. He played old Beatles songs and switched instruments, ending with a pyrotechnic show—marking his long music legacy—while his longtime band joined him on stage.  The Pitt News
  • Students attended the Drag Me to Bingo event at Pitt’s Nordy’s Place last weekend, hosted by Mrs. Kasha Davis—a famous drag queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race who led fun bingo rounds with interactive drag activities and prizes. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt students are using AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude for schoolwork while some worry that these tools may hurt their learning of core skills, and a study by Pitt Cyber found many feel guilt and anxiety when using them — some use AI only for busy work and when they are stuck. The mix of opinions shows that while AI helps with tasks such as writing emails and coding, students are careful not to let it replace learning the basics.  The Pitt News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pitt’s Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation released its 2024-25 annual report in October, which highlights multidisciplinary research and rising student and community engagement—featuring more than $2.9 million in seed grant funding. The report also outlines future plans for an online sustainable healthcare program and stronger local partnerships—aimed at boosting sustainability efforts across multiple fields.  The Pitt News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The University of Pittsburgh and the National Institutes of Health reached an agreement on research funding that keeps the indirect cost rate at 59% for the next four years—saving roughly $100 million annually, according to a local researcher. A Pitt spokesperson said the pact lets the university plan future research while leaving room for possible government changes.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Leapfrog Group study found that 12 hospitals in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio received A grades for patient safety in Fall 2025, including UPMC Passavant, UPMC Passavant Cranberry, UPMC St. Margaret, AHN Wexford Hospital, and Canonsburg General Hospital — while Penn Highlands Mon Valley and Weirton Medical Center received a D grade.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • College Gameday will stream live from the North Shore ahead of today's noon game at Acrisure Stadium as Pitt hosts Notre Dame in a college football playoff matchup—weather is expected to reach the 60s with a brief chance of light rain after kickoff.   • The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed running back Trey Sermon to their practice squad after releasing him from the active roster on Wednesday.
