COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Tull Family Foundation donated over 1,300 pounds of meat and produce to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank—this donation will provide over 150,000 meals amid SNAP cuts.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins are joining with Giant Eagle and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to distribute Thanksgiving meals to up to 300 families on Nov. 25 at the Mazeroski Way cul-de-sac from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.—each vehicle receives a turkey, festive produce, apple pie and a $15 Giant Eagle gift card—supporting local residents in need.  WPXI
  • Food banks in Armstrong, Greater Pittsburgh, Westmoreland, and northern Allegheny/ Butler areas are welcoming monetary and food donations to help meet rising demand due to SNAP gaps. Donors should review each agency’s guidelines for acceptable items and drop-off times (for example, unopened goods and hygiene products) during regular business hours.  The Tribune-Review
  • Home Depot employees from southwestern Pennsylvania volunteered at the Forest Hills veterans home on Ardmore Boulevard to upgrade landscaping and interior spaces for over 40 residents — including veterans and seniors.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt’s School of Nursing earned national recognition from the Association of Men in Nursing as one of the best schools for male nurses. The honor highlighted its strong support system with about 15% male enrollment and active clubs that boost clinical opportunities—creating a close community for future nurses.  The Pitt News
  • On Nov. 6, the Office of Planning, Design and Construction previewed the Campus Master Plan Draft at the Barco Law Building which outlined plans to renovate the PAA and convert upper floors at the William Pitt Union for student housing. The plan also proposed adding a fourth tower at Bouquet Street and Fifth Avenue to boost housing and improve campus walkability for students.  The Pitt News

  • Allegheny County officials said that repeated street names among its 130 municipalities cause 911 confusion—dispatchers check city names to match calls with mapping tools. Emergency Management Chief Matt Brown noted that every second counts when calls are misdirected.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rory Cooper, director of HERL, received a $41.5 million ARPA-H award on November 4 to build a new wheelchair and robotic arm that help people with disabilities do daily tasks faster — the project will use advanced robotics and artificial intelligence to improve mobility and safety for veterans and others.  University Times
  • Staff Council said that Pitt staff had access to a list of wellness resources aimed at eight areas of health—physical, emotional, financial, environmental, intellectual, occupational, social and mindful. The list offered ways for staff to get active and care for themselves through health coaching, fitness programs, and campus events.  University Times

  • Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington returned to full practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s session with a foot injury — he is expected to be available for Sunday's game against the Chargers. His improved participation follows a key role in both blocking and receiving during recent games.  PennLive
  • Steelers tight end Connor Heyward missed practice Thursday due to a knee injury — he had fully participated on Wednesday and his role on special teams is now uncertain.  PennLive
  • The Penguins saved their game against the Capitals on Thursday after a strong power play helped them overcome a three to zero lead. The team avoided a second loss and continued their impressive start—boosting their chances for the rest of the season.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Head coach Jeff Capel is preparing Pitt’s men’s basketball for the 2025—26 season by signing three four-star high school recruits: Anthony Felsi from Utah, Chase Foster from Florida, and guard Jermal Jones from IMG Academy. The recruits rank among the highest-rated in program history — promising a boost for the Panthers as Capel builds a developmental system.  The Pitt News
