COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ten-year-old cancer survivor Braelyn Gordon will light the holiday tree at PPG Place on Nov. 22 during the Tribute of Light Celebration, with festivities beginning at 4:30 p.m. and the tree lighting scheduled for 6 p.m. Her role (a symbol of hope) adds meaning to the event (drawing the community together) as the public is invited to celebrate.  WPXI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On November 4, U.S. Steel announced it would invest $11 billion by 2028 to modernize its facilities—this plan aims to unlock $2.5 billion in capital savings and $500 million in operational efficiencies while protecting over 100,000 U.S. jobs.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Since the Monongahela Incline shut down Saturday after a failed motor controller, Mount Washington businesses have seen fewer customers and 27 people were trapped for hours in two cars before being rescued. Crews replaced the controller Monday and will test-run the incline this week with officials set to inspect the 155-year-old funicular before it reopens.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kennywood Park announced new attractions for its Holiday Lights event that will begin on Nov. 14 and run until Jan. 4, featuring Pennsylvania's tallest Christmas tree, over three million lights, Gingerbread Junction and a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer experience+ tickets are available for $19.99 at a 60% discount.  WPXI
  • On November 1st, Playboi Carti led a high-energy show at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh during his Antagonist Tour—he performed tracks from MUSIC and Whole Lotta Red and debuted his song Place. Fans experienced vivid stage effects and brief safety breaks during the set—ending in a frenzied moment when Carti moved among a pushing crowd.  The Pitt News
  • Pitt’s University Art Gallery launched three new student curated exhibits on Oct. 16 at the Frick Fine Arts building to show local art and give students real experience.   • Pitt student groups are hosting nonpartisan discussions to address campus polarization following the recent free speech ranking,—with BridgePittsburgh and SYSCA leading efforts to share factual political information. They aim to provide a safe space where students learn to separate personal feelings from their political views.  The Pitt News
  • On Oct. 22, Pitt announced a new partnership with Amazon Web Services and Anthropic to build an AI-enabled campus that gives every student access to tools like Claude for Education—designed to offer digital training and workforce readiness. Some professors worry that such tools may weaken critical thinking while others praise the effort to prepare students for an AI-driven workplace.  The Pitt News
  • District leaders at a Monday night finance meeting said Pittsburgh Public Schools expects a $12.2 million deficit in its 2026 budget—this amount is much lower than they had originally expected.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Allegheny County Health Department closed the Family Dollar on Hays Avenue in Mt. Oliver on October 31 after inspectors found rodent droppings and chew holes in bags of cereal, chips, and animal crackers. The store must be cleaned, restocked — and treated for pests before it can reopen.  KDKA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pitt Volleyball’s Olivia Babcock and Brooke Mosher were awarded ACC honors today—Babcock as Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Mosher as Co-Setter of the Week. This marks their eighth recognition this season for their key roles on the team.  WPXI
  • The Pitt men's basketball team started the season with a 74–59 win over Youngstown State Monday night at the Petersen Events Center — it was their fourth straight season-opening win with Cameron Corhen scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  WPXI
  • The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will host Detroit City FC for a USL Championship Eastern Conference Semifinal at Highmark Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, marking the fourth meeting this season between the teams. The Riverhounds advanced with a 4-2 win on penalties over Hartford Athletic & Detroit City FC upset Louisville City FC 1-0, with the semifinal winner set to play in the Eastern Conference Final on November 15.  WPXI
