COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mt. Lebanon Public Library was named 2025 Library of the Year by the Pennsylvania Library Association for its strong community support and high circulation rates. In 2024, the library circulated over 764,000 items, served nearly 35,000 program attendees, and answered more than 23,000 reference questions — marking it as a standout local resource.  WTAE

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the new standalone Giant Eagle pharmacy opens at 10 a.m. at 211 Virginia Avenue in Mt. Washington to replace the closed Rite Aid and offer prescriptions, health, beauty and wellness products, prepared foods, produce and grocery essentials. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with a $2,500 donation and community events — including an appearance by the Pirate Parrot — will mark the opening while the store supports locals through its Fill it Forward program until November.  WPXI
  • Giant Eagle Pharmacy is opening a new standalone location today in Mount Washington at a former Rite Aid site on Virginia Avenue. The store will sell prepared foods, produce and grocery essentials—while the company plans a second location next month in Sewickley.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pittsburgh hosts many fun community events this weekend starting today with a STEM gala at The Fairmont Hotel, a pumpkin exhibit at the Zoo, and a film awards show at Rangos Giant Cinema. Other events include a Dracula show at the Benedum Center, Día de los Muertos celebrations in the Cultural District, and a Slovak Heritage Festival at the Cathedral of Learning—offering choices for all tastes.  NEXTpittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifteen Pittsburgh public schools were named among America’s Healthiest Schools as part of a national list by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation — a recognition for their work in supporting student, staff and family well-being.  WPXI
  • At the Heinz Architectural Center in Carnegie Museum of Art, the exhibit after school uses art to show how Pittsburgh Public Schools closed schools in the past and face more changes soon. The exhibit—drawing on archival photos and journalism—will include a companion book with further reporting to be released Nov. 13.  PublicSource
  • Pennsylvania’s budget impasse has left many state schools without the money they need and unpaid funds have forced some districts to take loans that may lead to layoffs and class cuts after Thanksgiving. Pittsburgh Public Schools did not receive $95 million from last year and have now enacted freezes on hiring, purchases and travel — raising fears that the financial strain will further impact classrooms — as the situation deepens.  CBS Pittsburgh

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On October 29th, Pittsburgh Water reported that a recent test showed the lead level in drinking water dropped to 2.0 parts per billion—the lowest ever recorded. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection certified the test taken from high-risk homes, and the utility remains focused on replacing remaining lead lines.  CBS Pittsburgh

FINANCE NEWS

  • A lottery ticket that matched all five numbers and won $200,000 was sold Tuesday at a Giant Eagle on University Boulevard in Moon Township — winners should sign the ticket and call the Lottery right away to start the claim process. Over 8,100 other Cash 5 tickets from the drawing also held prizes.  KDKA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and local leaders marked a milestone when they signed a steel column during the $600 million Market Square modernization project on Wednesday. The beam is set to be enclosed in a new pavilion that will give Downtown a fresh streetscape—its complete transformation is scheduled for April 2026.  WPXI
  • Officials said Market Square’s $15 million facelift is halfway complete and on track to finish before the NFL Draft in April; crews are installing new pavers and regrading streets for a curbless design. Work will shift to the south side on Monday with full vehicle traffic expected on November 10—officials say the project will boost downtown spaces for both visitors and Pittsburghers.  The Tribune-Review

  • The Steelers are changing Kyle Dugger’s contract by wiping out the final two years and shifting $5.4 million of his $9.75 million base salary to the Patriots—he will be paid only for this season and become a free agent at season’s end.  PennLive
  • Last Saturday, Pitt beat NC State 53–34 as first-year quarterback Mason Heintschel threw for 423 yards—setting a program record and marking him as the only Power 4 freshman to exceed 400 yards in a game. The Panthers improved to a 6–2 record and will face No. 8 Yellow Jackets on Nov. 22 in Atlanta as they build on their ACC title push.  The Pitt News
  • Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen has been nominated for the USAA Salute to Service Award for his work with veterans — he has provided hygiene kits, served breakfast, and supports Veterans Place on Washington Boulevard. Finalists will be announced in January and fans can vote online until Nov. 30.  WPXI
