COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Joseph the Worker Parish proposed closing seven of its eight churches on October 27, leaving only St. Maurice Church in Forest Hills open if Bishop Mark Eckman approves the plan in December, citing financial struggles and declining attendance.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • With SNAP benefits set to drop in November, 162,000 residents who rely on them may soon have trouble affording food. Local food banks and pantries have updated their hours and addresses to help families in need—neighbors are rallying to share the available resources.  Pittsburgh City Paper
  • Yesterday, hundreds of Pittsburgh Jewish community members gathered at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill to light candles and remember the 11 people killed in the 2018 Tree of Life attack—speakers emphasized that love is stronger than hate and urged everyone to carry on the spirit of unity. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pittsburgh International Airport’s new $1.7 billion terminal is nearly finished and will open before Thanksgiving to improve travel with modern security lanes and an attractive design inspired by local rolling hills—featuring an open atrium, expanded baggage claim, and 6,000 new parking spaces. Two trial runs have been held to test the systems so that the terminal will operate smoothly when it opens.  CBS Pittsburgh

SPORTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Steelers signed free agent wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling after he visited the team—ESPN reported the move reunites him with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with whom he spent four seasons and later won two Super Bowls with Kansas City. He signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract after his release from Seattle in late August.  WPXI
  • Joe Starkey reported that Jordan Love shined by breaking down the NFL’s highest-paid defense on Aaron Rodgers’ night — a strong performance that stood in contrast to his team’s earlier struggles against the Bengals. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told NBC analyst Tony Dungy that the defense failed to perform as expected.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison — a team legend — said the team must make big changes after Pittsburgh lost 35-25 to the Packers. Coach Mike Tomlin said the team might change players, but no further moves have been announced.  PennLive
