  • U.S. Steel plans to restart coke battery 14 today at its Clairton plant after completing repairs from an August explosion that killed two and injured at least 10—The company will closely monitor emissions and work with the Allegheny County Health Department to ensure safety and environmental compliance.  WTAE

  • Aliquippa mourned 24-year-old Gevod Tyson, a coach and gun violence activist who was fatally shot last week in a custody dispute—police hold the alleged shooter on homicide charges as his family vows to carry on his legacy.  WTAE

  • Pittsburgh is hosting a packed fall weekend with more than 15 events from art exhibits like 'Élan Cadiz: Healing the Erotic' at Alma | Lewis to family festivities at Phipps Conservatory and the National Aviary—each offering unique Halloween and cultural experiences through Oct. 23-26.   • At Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, Katie O’Malley stepped inside the famous cage from 'The Silence of the Lambs' as the museum prepares for its upcoming Cage Night (an event that highlights the film's iconic scene). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nonhuman Rights Project filed a lawsuit against Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium on October 22, alleging that five elephants suffer from stress and confinement and is asking the court to stop the planned move of Victoria and Zuri to a breeding center—experts note the animals show signs of trauma such as rocking and swaying. The petition claims that separating the elephants from their family members worsens their physical and emotional pain.  CBS Pittsburgh

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Pittsburgh’s fall dining scene now offers new tastes as Poulet Bleu reopened on Butler Street with French classics, F&F Pizzeria launched Brooklyn pies in Mt. Lebanon, Club Café opened its daytime space on South Side, Sushi Tomo moved to a new venue, Dancing Gnome reimagined its old taproom as Nine Two Five, El Burro reopened on Federal Street after a rebuild, Bruster’s remodeled its Bridgewater store and will open a Shadyside shop in November, and DiAnoia’s released slow-dried pasta made with local wheat — at the same time, Barb’s Corner Kitchen closed after over 40 years and a local wine lounge will serve its final glass on Oct. 31.  NEXTpittsburgh

  • Pitt football will face NC State for their Homecoming game at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday, October 25. The team is coming off a 30-13 win over Syracuse and will rely on strong defense—an effort that helped secure their previous victory.  WPXI
  • On October 22, the Penguins beat the Canucks 5–1 and Sidney Crosby passed Mario Lemieux to become the team’s all-time points leader with 1,896 total points. Later in the game, Kris Letang recorded his 600th assist and became the 20th defenseman in NHL history to do so—reaching a major milestone for the team.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Pitt volleyball star Olivia Babcock was named AVCA National Player of the Week for the fourth time after a weekend where she recorded 70 kills, including a record 41 in one match against No. 4 Louisville — tying her with Minnesota’s Stephanie Samedy.   • Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said cornerback Cory Trice will return soon from a hamstring injury he got in training camp. He missed a lot of time last season because of injuries — the team will check his health carefully during practice.  PennLive
