COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks and nonprofits in Allegheny County are planning food drives and new support programs after officials announced that November SNAP benefits will be delayed by the federal shutdown—Oakdale Hose Company has set drop-offs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help nearly 160,000 local recipients among two million Pennsylvanians. This move comes as groups work to fill the gap in food assistance until the shutdown ends.  WPXI

  • On Sunday, Mancini’s creative bakers unveiled two loaves of bread art inspired by Batman to honor Pittsburgh native Michael Keaton ahead of his Walk of Fame induction at the Strip District Terminal—he will be among the first ten inductees celebrated with bronze stars and plaques.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt began its global summit on Monday, Oct. 20 on health, AI and tech with panels and site visits at Alumni Hall. The two-day event is ongoing today and draws leaders from local universities, government and the private sector—highlighting innovations that could shape future policies and healthcare.  The Pitt News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Pittsburgh are opposing proposed data centers in Stowe Township and Springdale Borough because they fear high energy use and water consumption may harm the local environment + raise costs, while developers say the region’s skills and resources can support a future artificial intelligence boom. HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sunday, thousands gathered on the North Shore outside Acrisure Stadium for the Breakthrough T1D Walk, where about 2,500 participants and nearly 200 teams raised over $600K for type 1 diabetes research. Bethel Park grad Mason Miller joined the event to connect with others affected by T1D and support a cure — Breakthrough T1D executive Becky Withrow said the fundraiser made a big difference.  WPXI

  • On Sunday afternoon, Pitt volleyball star Olivia Babcock set a program record with 41 kills as the Panthers secured a five-set win over Louisville—improving their record to 15—3 overall and 7—1 in the ACC.
