COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Drivers should expect delays as beam deliveries on Parkway East are causing intermittent stoppages near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel+ motorists are urged to plan extra travel time for a smoother commute.  WPXI
  • Families can attend fall festivals across western Pennsylvania this weekend. At Stacks at 3 Crossings the free Monster Pumpkins Festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.—while Hartwood Acres hosts Punkin Chunkin from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Bark or Treat from noon to 2 p.m.—and the National Aviary offers Owl-O-Ween with treats, costumes and games.  CBS Pittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Pittsburgh launched its new Horror Studies Center to archive films and writings that show Pennsylvania’s deep ties to horror—materials include works by local filmmaker George A. Romero. The center will work with community groups to share its resources and support local study of the genre.  PennLive
  • A local lab in Pittsburgh is teaching young people coding skills at its STEM Coding Lab. CEO Melissa Fuller (who leads the lab) and program director Jason Hivner (who runs the demo) joined Heather and Ron in studio for a live demonstration of their technology program.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Local Task Force 3 on the Right to Education helps families with children with disabilities by offering guidance on special education rights and advocacy. The task force meets virtually (6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday) and will host Al Condeluci (at AIU headquarters on E. Waterfront Drive) on Nov. 5 to provide further insights.  The Tribune-Review

  • On Oct. 17, Pittsburgh hosted its first-ever Vision Zero Summit at the University Club in Oakland—sold out five days earlier—and speakers noted the city cut vehicle collisions by 32% in 2024 compared to the 20-year average. Key figures, including keynote Claudia Adriazola-Steil, explained that projects like AI-assisted bike route mapping, speed humps and new bike lanes will further improve road safety.  Pittsburgh City Paper
  • On October 17th, 2025, the National Safety Council honored USPS mail carrier Albert Cursi III with the Million Mile Award—an honor given for driving one million miles or 30 years without a preventable accident.   • A license to carry event will be held at South Park Community Center — attendees must bring a completed application, valid ID and $20 cash to get or renew their permit.  WPXI

HEALTH NEWS

  • An autopsy by the Pitt brain bank confirmed that Jon Burnett had chronic traumatic encephalopathy—CTE—and several other diseases after his family spent a decade trying to understand his health issues.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • A new study from the European Society of Cardiology questioned the benefit of beta blockers, which have been used for 40 years after heart attacks and taken by nearly 30 million patients daily. Dr. Amish Mehta of Allegheny Health Network urged patients to consult their doctors before changing their medication — the study found little overall benefit and possible harm for women.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers shoved offensive lineman Broderick Jones after the lineman came from behind during a celebration of a 68 yard touchdown pass to Pat Freiermiuth — Rodgers reacted quickly as teammates stepped in to separate them.  PennLive
  • Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen is playing elite football as praised by former teammate NFL nose tackle Breiden Fehoko—who said his heavy role in play calling adds extra pressure. Queen is under a three-year, $41 million contract that keeps him with the team through the 2026 season.  PennLive
  • The Penguins are playing fast under coach Dan Muse on a California road trip — they scored key points in both games. The team plans to keep testing its new approach in upcoming matches.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Trai Essex said the Steelers’ young offensive line played their best game of the season as they kept opposing pass rushers at bay—showing strong run blocking with over seven yards per carry against a weakened Bengals front.
