COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kidsburgh released its fall guide featuring family-friendly events — from glassblowing demonstrations and farm festivals to not-so-spooky Halloween gatherings that will take place this season.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Downtown Pittsburgh will serve as a meeting point for 'No Kings' protests this weekend as thousands plan to join nationwide rallies calling for change—organizers say the demonstrations aim to spotlight social justice issues.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An early morning water main break occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on October 16 near the intersection of Banksville Road and Coast Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Banksville neighborhood (with PennDOT and Penn-American Water responding) and had the potential to slow down traffic, though no road closures were reported.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Keylight Film is a new nonprofit that will share the history and techniques of indie filmmaking in Pittsburgh+ it held its first screening on August 23 at Squirrel Hill’s 61C Cafe and hosted a workshop on September 27, with more screenings and workshops planned for the future.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Warren Goss, a 100-year-old D-Day veteran from Ohio Township—known for his World War II service—spoke at a senior lunch at St. Athanasius in West View on Oct.15, sharing his experiences from Normandy, central France, and Germany. His talk highlighted moments of bravery and survival, and he was invited by friends Bob and Bobbie Walter to tell his story.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two students left school grounds without permission, including a 14-year-old who ran from teachers at Pittsburgh Bridges Academy and a 7-year-old with autism from Colfax K-8, prompting school leaders to review safety measures. Superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters said the unlocked staff door was fixed today+ additional security equipment will be considered once state funding is restored.  WTAE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Pittsburgh launched a Pilot Home Buying Program that invites buyers to tour five city-owned homes at an open house on October 18th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. City staff will be present to explain the bidding process and answer questions — a program based on public feedback during a 90-day comment period.  WPXI

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report by the Lown Institute said many back surgeries were not needed at two Pittsburgh hospitals and one near State College. The study, based on Medicare claims from 2020 to 2023, found 38 percent of spinal fusions at Heritage Valley Sewickley, 57 percent at Mount Nittany Medical Center and 30 percent of vertebroplasties at St. Clair Hospital were unneeded—Thomas Pangburn defended the practice by noting most cases receive Medicare approval.  The Tribune-Review
  • Rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania have operated without state funding since July 1, forcing cuts to services and staff while officials warn that federal funds may stop by the end of October. Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, the only center serving Allegheny County, said it froze spending and terminated two positions as other centers face similar financial pressures.  The Pitt News

  • With the 2026 NFL Draft coming next year, Pittsburgh homeowners are weighing rental options to host the expected influx of fans and prices will vary by location.   • Steelers fans packed Primanti Bros. at the Waterfront on Thursday night to watch the AFC North game against the Bengals—many enjoyed happy hour drinks and sandwiches while hoping to break a pattern of road losses.  WTAE
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers placed special teams captain Miles Killebrew—who suffered a significant knee injury against the Browns on Sunday—on injured reserve, and he is expected to miss most, if not all, of the season. Kenneth Gainwell has taken over Killebrew’s duties on the punt team for at least the next four games.  PennLive
