- ➤ Vincenzo Lopez, buried waist deep when a Charleroi trench collapsed 47 days ago, met with first responders at the Pennsylvania Urban Search and Rescue facility in Carnegie to thank them for their 5-hour rescue—he suffered a broken ankle, chipped a tooth, and donated a token of appreciation. - ➤ Local advocate Gabrielle Marsden worked with community groups to preserve pawpaw trees along the Allegheny River to help restore the nearly vanished zebra swallowtail butterfly—which decline had followed Pittsburgh’s industrial growth. Longtime pawpaw grower Joe Kostka of Natrona Heights also led planting efforts that supported local conservation and reintroduced the tree's natural habitat. PennLive
- ➤ Every fall, birds use Hays Woods Park to rest and eat before continuing their trip, and BirdLab (tracking birds since 2021) has found it hosts more species than its other sites in Pittsburgh. Founder Nick Liadis says the park's big green space helps birds in an urban setting, and he urges residents to plant native species and turn off outdoor lights at night. WTAE

- ➤ State and local leaders held a ribbon cutting at the new Pittsburgh International Airport terminal on Oct. 11, marking a key milestone for a project built with 90% locally sourced materials and creating more than 7,800 jobs—its improved design will offer quicker baggage claim and expanded parking.
