COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tech. Sgt. Paul F. Eshelman Jr., a World War II gunner shot down in 1943 and identified in 2023, was laid to rest with military honors at Allegheny County Memorial Park in McCandless on Oct. 12. His family, including Christine Bodnar who placed a celebratory cigar at her father’s grave, expressed deep relief at achieving closure after 82 years — a long-awaited homecoming for a forgotten hero.  The Tribune-Review
  • Crisis Center North (through the PAWS Program) is helping domestic violence survivors by providing therapy dogs that help them heal and rebuild their lives (bringing vital comfort and support). ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, a fire at an apartment complex on Mapleview Drive in Banksville displaced more than 20 people and several animals—firefighters rescued a resident and hospitalised a woman for smoke inhalation while the American Red Cross provided temporary housing and investigators looked into the cause.  CBS Pittsburgh

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Andy Warhol Museum is hosting Vanitas, a new exhibit that features a giant self-portrait and artworks with skulls to show the artist's thoughts about vanity and life. The exhibit uses pieces from Warhol and borrowed works from a Dutch museum and will run until March 9 + it is included with regular admission.  Pittsburgh City Paper

  • Point Park University is launching its new center for civic and community engagement in downtown Pittsburgh this fall. Dr. Heather Starr-Fiedler said the flexible hub will bring community members and university partners together to work on solving urban challenges—creating a space that can be easily adapted for meetings and events.  WTAE

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, Penn State fired head coach James Franklin after three straight losses and named Terry Smith as interim head coach— the school said it will start a national search for a new permanent coach.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers won 23-9 against the Cleveland Browns today at Acrisure Stadium as they rotated starters to gain extra playing time. The team showed strong passing and a solid defense throughout the game—although turnovers highlighted areas for improvement.  PennLive
  • Steelers wide receiver Scotty Miller is set to start against the Browns today after Calvin Austin III hurt his shoulder and was taken to a local hospital—x-rays showed no serious injury. Coach Mike Tomlin praised Miller for his competitiveness and his knowledge of the offense as he fills the downfield threat role.  PennLive
  • Steelers safety Chuck Clark is unexpectedly inactive for an upcoming game against the Browns after returning from serious injuries—his absence leads the team to rely on Jabrill Peppers to adjust the defense. Defensive tackle Logan Lee and Calvin Austin III are also inactive, and Scotty Miller is set for a larger role as the Steelers fine-tune their lineup.  PennLive
  • Today the Cleveland Browns elevated former Titans cornerback Tre Avery from the practice squad for the game against the Steelers—he signed with the team on September 18 and has earned special teams playing time with four tackles in two weeks.  PennLive
  • Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza improved his NFL Draft standing after a 30-20 win over Oregon on Oct. 11, with his 73% completion rate, 1208 yards, and 10 touchdowns drawing close attention. The Steelers have watched him twice this season—his strong arm and clear decisions make him an intriguing prospect for 2026.  PennLive
