  • Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop placed 2,600 rubber ducks on Pike Street over the past two weeks with 14-foot giant ducks seen on rooftops Thursday + the playful stunt aims to boost local business + spark community interest.  KDKA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kooser Farms filed for Chapter 12 bankruptcy at U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pittsburgh to reorganize after switching its focus from dairy to crop production. The Mill Run farm—facing lower yields from challenging weather—seeks to restructure its payment system from monthly checks to an annual schedule.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wiz Khalifa reflected on how his hit 'Black and Yellow' changed his life and brought pride to Pittsburgh after its fall 2010 release. He said the song launched his career and will continue to open doors for new artists—showing his deep roots in the city.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The 31st annual Pumpkinfest will bring family-friendly fun to Pittsburgh’s North Side tomorrow at Allegheny Commons East Park from 1 to 5 p.m.—it will include a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating, hayrides, pony rides, amusement rides, live music, games and crafts for children 12 and under. A Health and Wellness Fair will also offer families resources on healthy living and a rain date is set for Sunday.  WPXI
  • Crews have begun building the new Pittsburgh Walk of Fame in the Strip District where granite blocks with bronze stars and plaques are being set in front of the Terminal on 18th Street. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools will halt hiring for vacant positions except teachers+paraprofessionals and freeze non-essential purchases as a state budget crisis has delayed funding; the steps aim to protect classroom operations and staff payroll until state funds are released. Superintendent Wayne N. Walters said these measures will not disrupt essential services such as instruction, meals, transportation, or student support.  The Tribune-Review
  • Plum will honor five distinguished alumni with a ceremony at Oakmont Country Club on Dec. 16+ they will visit the high school on Dec. 17 for interviews and to unveil their Wall of Distinction photos.  The Tribune-Review

  • Steelers wide receiver Ben Skowronek had an illness early in the week and was limited on Wednesday—signs show he is on the mend and he will likely play in the game against the Browns.  PennLive
  • Savannah Bananas—known as The Greatest Show In Sports—announced two new teams on Thursday night during the Banana Ball City Selection Show; the event also revealed 2026 World Tour stops including a game at PNC Park and a ticket lottery open until Oct. 31.  WPXI
  • Yesterday the Penguins unveiled new gold jerseys at their home opener featuring a triangle logo with a skating penguin and design details that honor Point State Park, the Civic Arena, the three rivers and the historic trolley system. The team said the alternate jersey (reminiscent of Mario Lemieux and 1980s Penguins) will be worn in 11 games this season.  WPXI
  • On October 9th, Jason Mackey hosted a Pirates chat where he discussed the team's performance, upcoming schedule, and plans for the season. The conversation gave local fans insight into his thoughts on the Pirates' future progress.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin + Kris Letang became the longest tenured trio in North American sports as they played their 20th season together and received a special introduction at the home opener, with coach Dan Muse praising their strong bond.  WPXI
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers will upgrade 22,000 seats at Acrisure Stadium over the next two years as part of a $17 million project funded by new ticket surcharges—these upgrades will fix broken and rusting seats, including those for disabled fans, to prepare the stadium for the NFL Draft next year. Further improvements are planned as the team addresses its lease expiring in 2030.  PennLive
  • Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers explained that the team uses quick, short passes instead of throwing deep because defenses play Cover 2—a trend that limits deep opportunities until the team improves its running game.
