COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monessen will hold its 3rd annual Wall of Fame induction at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the high school auditorium located at 1245 State Road to honor local sports star Charel Allen—inducted into the Mid Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2019—and four other community leaders in education, military and government. Tickets cost $15 and students get in free, with a limited number available at the door.  The Tribune-Review
  • Riverlife launched a $30M campaign called 'Three Rivers. One Loop' today to start the first phase of its plan to connect Pittsburgh's riverfront parks and trails. The nonprofit builds on past investments and aims to create more open spaces—helping to renew focus on downtown and riverfront life.  WPXI

  • This week in Pittsburgh, concerts will feature top musical acts including Pat Metheny—set to perform at Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall—and Ben Folds, Gary Numan, and Psychedelic Furs at local venues.   • A PA Lottery Cash 5 ticket that matched five drawn numbers sold this weekend at Sheetz on Babcock Boulevard in Ross Township is worth $675,000—Sheetz earned a $5,000 bonus for the sale and winners should sign their ticket and call the Lottery to claim their prize.  KDKA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt launched its new Horror Studies Center in September—an academic program that works with the University Library System to display classic film and literature archives. The center plans to expand its courses and encourage students to study horror as a serious subject.  The Pitt News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 6, 2025, Pennsylvania lawmakers introduced a bill to legalize water cremation and it passed in the state House with bipartisan support, signaling a move to offer aquamation as a gentle and eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods. Proponents say the process uses 95-percent water and 5-percent liquid potassium hydroxide to produce about 30-percent more ashes while avoiding emissions.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Health Department closed Chace’s Dining Hall on the 300 block of East Carson Street on October 1 after an inspection found improper plumbing—no three-bowl sink and dedicated handwashing sink—and that the restaurant operated without a Food Safety permit. Updates on the closure will be posted on the county’s website.  KDKA
  • Remote Area Medical will hold a free clinic at Butler Intermediate High School on November 8-9 to offer dental, vision, and medical care to anyone without insurance or ID. Doors open at 6 a.m.—services will be on a first-come, first-served basis with a shorter day on Sunday.  WPXI

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two Pittsburgh-area townships have accused mall owner Michael Kohan of deliberately neglecting his properties—failing to pay taxes and perform routine maintenance—which has led to nearly empty malls and forced local governments to cover repair costs. Robinson Township has already cited him for code violations and warns nearby communities to avoid similar disinvestment.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers signed running back Raheem Blackshear to their practice squad today to ease kick return challenges as Kaleb Johnson struggles and Jaylen Warren recovers from a knee injury — he brings NFL experience from the Panthers and Titans and a strong background from Archbishop Wood in Warminster. He has played in 41 games with 203 yards and three touchdowns, boosting the team's depth ahead of upcoming contests.  PennLive
  • After their bye week, the Steelers resumed practice on Monday with players such as Patrick Queen, Jaylen Warren, Alex Highsmith, and Joey Porter Jr. taking part in conditioning while Calvin Austin works through a shoulder injury—his recovery remains uncertain.
