CULTURE NEWS

  • North libraries held the Battle of the Books fundraiser on Sept. 11 at the Hampton Community Center in northern Allegheny County—22 teams competed and the Spinecrackers scored a perfect 150 as the event raised over $2,000 for library programs.  The Tribune-Review
  • Taylor Swift fans gathered at local stores on Friday morning in North Fayette Township to get physical copies of her album The Life Of A Showgirl. A movie titled Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl began showing at Pittsburgh theaters and drive-ins on Friday—adding more excitement for Taylor fans.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University will host GFCC’s Global Innovation Summit from Oct. 19 to 21, where experts and leaders meet to discuss how health, AI and emerging tech drive change in local research and partnerships—underscoring Pittsburgh’s role in shaping the future of technology.  University Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Shapiro met with local leaders including Lt. Gov. Davis, Mayor Gainey, and other officials in Pittsburgh today to review progress on a downtown revitalization plan that includes demolishing 8th Street and Penn Avenue for a $35 million Arts Landing project. Officials also discussed upgrades to Point State Park and Market Square, with improvements accelerated by the upcoming NFL Draft such as $3.4 million for park repairs and $16 million for renovations aimed at better pedestrian access.  WTAE
  • The Department of Public Works granted a permit to P3R to close the inbound Armstrong Tunnel and the Philip Murray Bridge for the Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run and Family Walk — closures run from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 5.  Allegheny County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Psychiatrist Vint Blackburn said he faced high stress and dark thoughts after a false accusation hurt his work—he suffered from burnout. He said that converting his pickup into an off-road vehicle has helped him regain control and hope by using his hobbies to cope.  PublicSource
  • The Fayette County coroner, Bob Baker, issued a warning about gas station heroin—an unregulated opioid made from 7-hydroxymitragynine that is sold in many forms at local gas stations, convenience stores, and vape shops. The FDA and DEA are reviewing the product while Baker urged parents to watch for signs of youth exposure.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Pittsburgh welcomes spooky season events this weekend; today, the Brighton Heights House Tour runs at Legion Park from 11 a.m.—4 p.m. and the Hello Kitty Truck is at Ross Park Mall from 10 a.m.—7 p.m. Other events include Freeport's Halloween Carnival, a Fall Show at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and Rocktoberfest 2025 at South Side Works.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes was named Baseball Digest's Pitcher of the Year on October 3 — he finished his season with 10 wins, a 1.97 ERA, and 216 strikeouts.   • Today, Pitt hosts Boston College at noon with a 2-2 record as the team aims to break its trend against a Power 4 opponent. The Panthers plan to stay hungry — manage the blitz — and use deep passes from quarterback Eli Holstein to secure a win.  The Pitt News
  • Steelers pass rusher Nick Herbig, filling in for injured Alex Highsmith, has made 2.5 sacks and 8 quarterback hits in 2.5 recent games — bringing his total to 5 sacks and 13 hits in seven starts — as coaches praise his all-around play.  PennLive
  • Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III got positive news on his shoulder injury as his x-rays came back negative—he was not wearing a sling on Wednesday and may miss little or no time.  PennLive
  • The Panthers face Boston College for a noon kickoff today at home as they try to break a losing streak and senior running back Desmond Reid is expected to boost an offense that struggled last week—head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed that quarterback Eli Holstein will remain the starter in a matchup predicted to see a win by at least two scores.  The Pitt News
