COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pittsburgh hosts a busy weekend with many events such as Oktoberfest — featuring a 60-foot Ferris wheel and Bavarian treats — live theater, film festivals, gaming expos, and local community gatherings across the city.   • Meijer, a Michigan-based supermarket chain, will open its first Cranberry store after buying land at Henderson Crossing near the future Wegmans and Giant Eagle headquarters—its proposal will be reviewed by the planning commission at month’s end.  KDKA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers in southwestern Pennsylvania are using AI tools to help students learn and analyze literature at Hempfield Area Senior High School—teacher Denine Frye asked her students to use chatbots for generating responses and reviewing their work. Other educators in local districts are testing different AI programs to reduce workload and adjust assignments while they develop new guidelines for its use.  PublicSource
  • Bridge Educational Foundation and U.S. Steel awarded over $540K in scholarships to local students in the Mon Valley to help pay for school — the funds will ease financial burdens as students attend classes.  WPXI
  • At Pitt, a longstanding collaboration between the Dietitian Nutritionist program and Pitt Athletics gives DN students hands-on experience providing one-on-one nutrition consultations and managing on-campus fueling stations — resources that boost student-athlete performance. Started in 2016, the program continues to offer practical training and improved nutritional support — a model that benefits both athletes and future health professionals.  University Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT opened Pennsylvania’s 20th federally funded EV charging station on Thursday at the Freeport Road Sheetz in Harmar Township off Interstate 76 Exit 48. The station—built with National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funds—puts Pennsylvania in the national lead as previous projects provided over 30,000 charging sessions and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 1.7 million pounds.  WPXI
  • Pittsburgh launched a program to simplify buying city-owned homes after the City Council removed longstanding legal and procedural barriers—residents can now purchase these properties more easily.  WPXI
  • Traffic officials announced a lane restriction on Southbound I-79 at the Neville Island Bridge this weekend and said drivers will face delays in Allegheny County.  WPXI

  • Local gardeners in Pittsburgh can plant ten top spring-blooming bulbs this October — including tulips and daffodils that will brighten yards next spring — by preparing the soil and spacing bulbs correctly for long-term color.  PennLive

  • The Steelers’ star cornerback Jalen Ramsey was injured and did not finish the game against the Vikings, raising concerns about his availability for future games—defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said the team will simplify its calls to adjust for any loss of his play.   • PPG Paints Arena will offer new food items and merchandise for the upcoming Penguins season as Chef Terry Davidson leads the effort to add themed dishes honoring Mike Lange. The new menu features a smoked pastrami hoagie, braised beef nachos and a food hall — and fans can also get bobbleheads and Fleury gear to celebrate the team’s twentieth season.  WPXI
  • Steelers safety DeShon Elliott blasted the NFL on Instagram—saying 'Count your F— days'—after he was fined $5,979 for using an unapproved black towel during a game in Ireland against the Vikings.   • Today, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and quarterback Aaron Rodgers outsmarted the Vikings by using fast passes and smart plays that stopped the Vikings’ pre-snap trickery — a Vikings player said Rodgers’ quick release and clear thinking helped make big plays.
