  • Young Dreamers Bookstore grew from a book club to a mobile and online shop that sells books featuring characters of African descent to help children see themselves in literature + the founders, Dr. Nosakhere Griffin-EL and Dr. Eliada Griffin-EL, work with local groups and schools to bring these titles to families.  Pittsburgh City Paper

CRIME NEWS

  • Neighbors in Mount Pleasant and Mount Pleasant Township are disgusted after swastikas were painted on signs near a local junior/senior high school just a day before Yom Kippur—community members say the hateful act has sparked outrage.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • SWOON Alliance hosted a circus fundraiser—Cirque Erotique: Harvest Moon—at Iron City Circus Arts on September 20, where the sold-out event featured over 20 performers from Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington DC. The fundraiser supported AIDS Free Pittsburgh's work to end stigma against sex work.  Pittsburgh City Paper
  • Backstage has compiled a list of casting calls for movies and TV shows, with some projects filming in Pittsburgh — calling for roles in documentaries, feature films and shorts. The listings offer hourly pay from $10 to $125 and include parts for leads and support.  WPXI
  • Comedian Bert Kreischer announced on October 1 that he will add a tour stop in Pittsburgh—bringing his comedy show to local audiences soon.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt has revised its Campus Master Plan to focus on new on-campus student housing — including converting the upper levels of the William Pitt Union into living spaces and moving the student union to the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building — to meet growing enrollment and improve campus accessibility. The Office of Planning, Design and Construction will present the plan for approval to the Board of Trustees in December.  The Pitt News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Josh Shapiro signed an executive order on Wednesday that protects vaccine access by creating a safety net and an online portal for verified information—state agencies must now follow trusted medical guidance and launch a team to fight misinformation. The order sets a six-step plan to ensure people can get vaccines covered by Medicaid and private insurance.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Today, the City of Pittsburgh released a preliminary 2026 budget that shows total revenue of $680.5 million and expenditures of $680 million, with no layoffs but the elimination of about 50 unfilled positions — the plan boosts funding for vehicle purchases and traffic safety projects and will be refined before submission to City Council in November.  WPXI
  • Pittsburgh City Council added housing status as a protected class in an ordinance passed on Tuesday—aimed at stopping landlords from denying housing to people who have experienced homelessness or lived in temporary housing. Officials said anyone who thinks they have been treated unfairly can file a complaint with the Commission on Human Relations.  WPXI
  • The Allegheny County Department of Sustainability is hosting a series of free public meetings this October to gather input on its Climate Action Plan that will help reduce emissions and create local jobs—sessions are set for Oct 14 at Community Forge in Wilkinsburg, Oct 16 at Castle Consortia in McKees Rocks, Oct 23 online, and Oct 29 at the Glassport Municipal Building.  Allegheny County

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Sept. 29 inspection at Thai Foon in Robinson Township found 18 health code violations — including four high-risk issues such as employee hygiene lapses and mold in a soda machine— which led to a consumer alert. The restaurant must fix all issues and have its head chef complete a certified course before a re-inspection takes place within the next 10 days.  WPXI
