CULTURE NEWS

  • HorrorPGH published its guide to Halloween in Pittsburgh to help fans plan visits to local events and sights—covering themed shops, film screenings and parties that celebrate the city’s horror history. The guide details activities from October 3 to Oct. 31 in neighborhoods such as Allentown and Swissvale.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Pittsburgh will host 12 fall events in October—ranging from Oktoberfest Pittsburgh with a ceremonial keg tapping on Oct. 2 to the Monster Pumpkins Festival showcasing giant gourds on Oct. 18–19—with film festivals, art parties, and community celebrations rounding out the lineup. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh officials quickly adjusted the 2026 budget proposal after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck down the jock tax — which cost the city nearly $4 million in revenue. They updated projections and trimmed spending ahead of Tuesday's unveiling as declining real estate tax revenue added more strain on the city's budget.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses will continue serving The Waterfront shopping center in Homestead after Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato reached an agreement with property owner M and J Wilkow. Senator Nick Pisciottano said the deal ensures riders do not have to walk farther to bus stops and helps keep transit access for shoppers and workers—aiming for a long-term solution.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • A $14 million initiative called the New Pathways project — funded largely by a US DOT RAISE grant — will improve sidewalks and streets in Pittsburgh’s Hill District by replacing damaged sidewalks and upgrading three intersections along Centre Avenue.   • More than 9,000 runners and walkers joined the 48th Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race on September 29, with participants coming from 38 states and Washington D.C. Pittsburgh native Timothy Purcell won the men's 10K in 30:28 while Madison Trippet won the women's 10K and Noah Bernarding and Maddie Salak won the 5K races—each registration also donated $1 to support amyloidosis research.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • On September 28th, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke the NFL record for completions over 50 yards with an 80-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf—his key play secured a 24-21 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin.  WPXI
  • Former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields returned Monday night after missing one game with a concussion and started for the Jets against the Miami Dolphins in NFL Week 4—he suffered the head injury in the fourth quarter against the Bills and had struggled before his return.  PennLive
  • Kiski Area High School marching band took first place at the Bands of America regional championship in Central Ohio as they competed against 23 bands for outstanding musical performance and general effect—while the Hampton band placed ninth.  WTAE
  • A Pittsburgh native won first place in the 48th Great Race+ where over 9,000 runners and walkers took part in the early morning hours of the weekend.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The No. 5 Pitt volleyball team beat No. 11 SMU at the Peterson Events Center on Sunday in a 3-1 match led by Olivia Babcock, who had 29 kills including 13 in the third set — a key moment that secured the win. The Panthers remain undefeated at home with a 16-0 record since 2019 and claimed their sixth top 25 win of the season.  WPXI
