COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept. 25, a fire broke out at the former Century III Mall during demolition work with no injuries reported + the Small Business Administration is offering disaster aid to Squirrel Hill fire victims while state police are searching for 83-year-old Clara Waters who left her Loyalhanna home on foot that day. The Settlers Ridge shopping center is up for sale and the Sewickley Public Library reopened today after repairs from water damage with some areas remaining closed.  The Tribune-Review

BUSINESS NEWS

  • U.S. Steel approved an investment plan for the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock yesterday. The company will soon submit a permit for a new slag recycler—pending Allegheny County Health Department approval—with construction expected to begin in 2026 at a cost of about $100 million as Nippon Steel commits to further mill upgrades and retains U.S. Steel headquarters in Pittsburgh.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel approved an investment plan that will give the Edgar Thomson Plant about $100 million in upgrades next year—modernizing its operations.  CBS Pittsburgh

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pittsburgh will host over a dozen events this weekend—ranging from a metal festival to a Frick Art show and a PSO opener—that bring local music and art to diverse neighborhoods.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Pittsburgh’s new Monongahela Pop Festival will be held at the Government Center on October 3 and 4 — local bands like Greg Hoy and the Boys will perform on the first night while the original Frampton Brothers lineup reunites on the second night.   • Tech job postings in Pittsburgh have grown since last year, but many graduates and experienced workers say the hiring process is slow because companies need very specific skills—some have even left the city to find work. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that Pittsburgh's 'jock tax' is unconstitutional because it charged non-residents 3% while residents paid lower rates — the decision means the city will lose millions and may adjust its budget plans next week.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The Southmoreland School Board voted this week to censure School Director Catherine Fike—who disclosed confidential student information during its Sept. 16 meeting—and to stop livestreaming its meetings. The board’s decision follows Fike's controversial comments that prompted a review of their meeting policies.  The Tribune-Review
  • Today the Department of Public Works granted permits for two upcoming events that will close the Roberto Clemente Bridge — P3R will close it from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on September 27 for the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race and PDP will close it from 9 a.m. on September 29 to 4 p.m. on October 14 for Oktoberfest — with traffic detoured via Isabella Street and the Andy Warhol Bridge.  Allegheny County

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Forbes Hospital in Monroeville and nine other regional hospitals, new state-of-the-art chemical decontamination tents have been delivered to help treat hazardous spills+ they will boost rapid responses during worst-case emergencies.   • The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that outside linebacker Alex Highsmith—who suffered a high ankle sprain against the Seahawks—will not play against the Vikings on Sunday because he did not fly with the team today.   • Paul Skenes ended his sophomore season in a 4-3 extra inning win over the Reds when he pitched six clean innings — striking out seven batters — which helped lower his ERA below 2 and made him the first Pirate in the live ball era to reach that mark.
