- ➤ Tu Y Yo café opened in Sewickley in August and offers Latin American coffee, small bites and sweets in a space with a children's nook and teen area—its owner Grace Betancourt Jones from Fox Chapel said she built the café to bring people together. Her first location opened in Indiana Twp in 2019 and she will host a community event in October to showcase authentic flavors. The Tribune-Review
- ➤ Bruce’s Wish honors Bruce Gelman’s promise by providing $1,000 annually to a Pittsburgh family in need every October for the next ten years. Bruce’s wife Beatrice is accepting nominations until October 1 and requires that nominees come from the Pittsburgh area. KDKA

- ➤ Aliquippa mourned 18-year-old Kendric Curtis who was fatally shot Friday morning outside the Linmar Terrace apartment complex by an ATF agent after he fled an investigation—community members observed a moment of silence at the high school football game and are holding a peaceful protest today with a vigil planned for Sunday to honor his memory. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The University of Pittsburgh and the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center are partnering for the fourth annual Indigenous Cultural Festival in September on campus. A mini powwow will run on Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Cathedral of Learning lawn, leading to COTRAIC’s annual powwow on Sept. 27 (noon to 9 p.m.) and Sept. 28 (noon to 5 p.m.), with free admission for Pitt affiliates who show their Pitt ID. - ➤ KDKA Radio's Chris Moore will be inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Gold Circle this weekend—an honor given to broadcasters with careers spanning five decades or more. He earned a Silver Circle in 2018 and said his long work in radio has helped him adapt to new media trends. KDKA
- ➤ The University Library System is hosting an open house at Hillman Library from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 26 — to inspire local artists and community members to explore collections, join gallery talks, and try hands-on makerspace activities for the Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh exhibit themed around archives. - ➤ Pitt has updated its Campus Master Plan to convert the William Pitt Union into suite-style housing and repurpose the Pittsburgh Athletic Association into a new student center—this plan also improves pedestrian areas in Oakland. The proposals will go through a rigorous approval process and invite public input at a forum held today from noon to 2 p.m. at Dan Marino Field and another on Sept. 23 outside Trees Hall. - ➤ FIRE released its sixth annual College Free Speech Rankings on Friday, September 19 and found that Pitt earned an F rating after 350 students answered questions about campus speech. The survey showed that many schools received failing grades because students opposed controversial speakers—indicating a trend away from engaging with differing ideas. University Times
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ CNX Resources plans to reapply for new permits for two gas wells on the Drakulic well pad near Penn Township's border with Trafford while nonprofit Protect PT may have to restart its nearly decade-long challenge after permits expired on Aug. 17 (the site lies near homes, schools, and churches and raises public health concerns). CNX said it will align the project with its own operational standards with strict monitoring, while Protect PT contends the permit lapse allows the company to sidestep tougher safety measures. - ➤ A Munhall resident has tested positive for West Nile Virus, making them the third case in Allegheny County. The patient was not hospitalized and did not travel out of the county as the Health Department will expand surveillance in Munhall-homestead areas next week. KDKA
- ➤ Pennsylvania joined a coalition of northeastern states to update public health and immunization guidelines amid concerns over changes at the CDC — state officials will meet regularly to plan emergency preparedness and vaccine protocols. The coalition includes Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Tribune-Review

- ➤ Pitt volleyball beat Penn State in a match that lasted four sets on the road and now has a one week break before its first conference game. The team will play No. 10 SMU in Dallas on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.—coach Dan Fisher said the game will test the group’s growing strength. The Pitt News
- ➤ Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth is valued for his leadership as much as his production—he is set to bounce back in the upcoming Foxborough homecoming game. His performance will be closely watched as he works to improve his play and help the team regain momentum. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
