COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A large water main break shut down part of a busy North Hills road yesterday — the water has since receded — and crews are making repairs.  WPXI
  • Pirates ace Paul Skenes is teaming up with the Gary Sinise Foundation and Grainger to honor local first responders today at the Monroeville Public Safety Training Center by providing meals and more than $100,000 in equipment grants. He has raised his target from $100,000 to $150,000—adding crucial support for four Pittsburgh departments.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sol Invictus will be shown at the Byham Theater on Sept. 20 — a multicultural dance production by Compagnie Hervé KOUBI that celebrates unity, life and love.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • African Cuisine in Squirrel Hill was named Best African Restaurant after years of close votes and is now celebrating its first win since opening in 2021. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Keystone Oaks and Hempfield school districts launched new programs that give students hands-on classroom teaching experience to help with the national teacher shortage. The Keystone Oaks Rising Teachers Program and Hempfield Aspiring Educators Program let students rotate with different teachers—helping them learn all facets of education before college.  WTAE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study published Wednesday found that EQT’s 2022 frack-out contaminated water in New Freeport by showing oil, gas brine, and high methane levels beyond the 2,500-foot impact zone—officials in Freeport and Springhill declared emergencies and are seeking grants for a long-term water solution as EQT continues operations.  PublicSource

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allegheny County officials approved ballot return sites and satellite offices to offer mail-in ballot requests and in-person drop-offs ahead of the November election. The services will run on set dates and times at several local locations (such as Homewood and the County Office Building) in late October and early November.  WPXI
  • The city council will vote on a plan to build a new public safety training center near the old VA Hospital — the process could begin soon.  CBS Pittsburgh

SPORTS NEWS

  • A Steelers film study shows that Aaron Rodgers needs a running threat to boost his offense after his team lost by 17 points to the Seahawks. The study says adding a runner is seen as key for future wins—analysts believe this move will help improve play.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • The Steelers lost 31 to 17 to the Seahawks as standout linebacker Jack Sawyer was named the top performer — the loss has led the team to rethink its strategy for the next games.  PennLive
