  • Five months after April 29 storms left over 300,000 people without power in parts of Pittsburgh, Duquesne Light said it is upgrading its systems by expanding its automated phone service and piloting a chatbot so field crews can work faster— the company is spending nearly $3 billion to modernize its grid by 2029.  WTAE

  • Mike Canton—also known as Soul Show Mike—launched The Soul Pod, a new podcast recorded from his car that will feature interviews with local figures as he builds on decades of experience from the Soul Show.   • Pitt students and alumni face a tough job market as fewer entry-level positions become available due to rising unemployment, government spending, and worries about AI’s impact—employers are cautious about hiring and many graduates find the odds stacked against them.  The Pitt News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shaler Area Middle School will have a full roof replacement, selective HVAC upgrades, fire alarm and parking lot repairs over the next three years after the board cut the project to about $8.2 million from over $20 million—bids will be sought in January and construction will start in June after students leave.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal will have two public trial runs before its grand opening. The first test on Saturday will use 450 volunteers to act as both departing and arriving passengers, and a second trial will use up to 2500 volunteers to simulate peak hours—airport officials will use the feedback to decide when to open.  WTAE
  • The City of Pittsburgh installed traffic calming measures on Shady Avenue in Squirrel Hill after a resident-requested study showed high speeds, and officials say the changes will help improve safety—officials noted the upgrades were planned following community feedback.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will speak about political violence today at the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Downtown Pittsburgh—less than a week after a gunman killed conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The governor, who survived an April attack when his home was firebombed, will share his message of moral clarity during a 25-minute talk introduced by former Gov. Tom Corbett.  The Tribune-Review
  • The Allegheny County Board of Elections approved plans on September 15 for ballot return sites and satellite offices ahead of the November general election—County Executive Sara Innamorato, Councilmember Bethany Hallam, and Board Member Cindy Kirk voted unanimously—ensuring voters have in-person options on key dates in October and November.  Allegheny County

  • Flowers were left at Franklin Regional Senior High School on Monday after a student died by suicide behind the school Sunday morning, and officials arranged counseling options from Westmoreland County Behavioral Health — University of Pittsburgh’s youth counseling service to support students.  The Tribune-Review

  • Sidney Crosby visited a season ticket holder's home yesterday as part of a nearly 20-year tradition — season ticket holders received notice of a player's visit without knowing which player until arrival.  WPXI
  • On Sunday, the Steelers tried to stop the run but Seattle scored on a 19-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Walker III to win 31-17. T.J. Watt said the team must fix its weak run defense—injuries and a fragile offensive line worry teammates ahead of future games.  WPXI
  • The New England Patriots may gain a boost if cornerback Christian Gonzalez returns against the Pittsburgh Steelers after missing two games due to a hamstring injury sustained late July. Coach Mike Vrabel said there is a chance for his comeback + his return could change the game dynamics and pressure the Steelers' offense.  PennLive
