COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fire damaged Dornie & Lori Daycare on Aug. 27 in Derry Township, but all 10 kids escaped safely—community members quickly sent donations and extra help. Lori plans to rebuild the daycare and a spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held at Latrobe Community Ministries on Sept. 27 from 3—7 p.m.—tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children.  WTAE
  • In Pittsburgh, survivors from a massive fire at the Jefferson Apartment came together as newlyweds Jasper Mays and Jonahcharis Brown lost their home and cherished belongings in the blaze. The victims are now accepting clothing and monetary donations to help rebuild their lives—neighbors are standing together after the tragedy.  WTAE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday night, Pittsburgh Regional Transit said PennDOT approved its $106.7 million request for state capital funds to avoid service cuts and fare hikes set to start early 2026. Later this month, PRT will amend its operating and capital budgets—covering a projected $100 million deficit—while working on a long-term solution, CEO Katharine Kelleman said.  WTAE
  • Allegheny Township supervisors approved plans for Rural Urgent Care, LLC — a 2,700 square-foot facility at 48 Towne Center Drive near the magistrate's office — to improve local access to care. Representatives are working with Westmoreland County engineers to finalize entrance and exit plans, and the company will break ground next year with six months planned for completion.  The Tribune-Review

  • New Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jabrill Peppers said he joined the team for their strong tradition + coaching and a fresh chance to earn a starting role. He explained his move from New England was not on his own terms and will allow him to show his versatility on defense and special teams over the coming weeks.  PennLive
  • Steel Valley beat defending champs South Park — a win that sets the tone for the first week of conference play as teams adjust their strategies.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Marc-Andre Fleury will join the Penguins on a professional tryout contract and will practice on Sept. 26 before playing parts of an exhibition game against Columbus on Sept. 27 at PPG Paints Arena.  WPXI
  • At Acrisure Stadium, 68,400 fans will come to see the Steelers' home opener on Sunday—Aramark Executive Chef Ruairi Boyce is making a Spice Box dish with onions, peppers, and chili flakes for sale at the Grid Iron Grill in Section 121. The stadium also has a new 45-yard miniature football field for fun fan games and self-checkout service at Steel City Markets for club ticket holders.  WTAE
  • Today, Pitt heads to Morgantown for the 108th Backyard Brawl after blowout wins at home while West Virginia deals with injuries to star running back Jahiem White and wide receiver Jaden Bray; Pitt will focus on stopping West Virginia’s mobile quarterback Nicco Marchiol—and controlling its run game to keep the opponent from gaining momentum.  The Pitt News
  • Today, the Panthers play the Mountaineers in the Backyard Brawl at Milan Puskar Stadium as fans gather with watch parties and some students make a 75-mile trip to see the game live. Pitt is favored to win after the Mountaineers lost to MAC division Ohio—past games have shown that travel costs and harsh heckling have forced many to adjust their plans.  The Pitt News
