ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 102-year-old woman—Mary Lutz—died in a multi-vehicle crash on Friday near the intersection of Resort Plaza Drive and State Route 22 in Indiana County when one driver ran a red light, state troopers said.  CBS Pittsburgh

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a Fayette County couple in Redstone Township after rescuers freed five children locked in a room with boarded windows and walls smeared with feces—officials said the children, aged 5 to 14, received limited food and clothing while confined.  PennLive
  • Police said negotiations ended at 9 a.m. Saturday after closing Route 28 on the North Side for seven hours following a man’s threat to jump from the East Ohio Street overpass in Deutschtown—he was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for treatment.  The Tribune-Review
  • An EMT with ties to a local football program was arrested and now faces multiple charges including sexual assault by a sports official, indecent assault without consent, and endangering the welfare of children after forensic interviews with juvenile victims led state police to act—his employer confirmed he was on leave and the school district banned his access to facilities.  WPXI

  • A Pennsylvania couple bought the world’s oldest drive-in theater in OREFIELD after a road trip and romance led them to the unique property—They plan to update the site while keeping its historic charm.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Twenty volunteers from the Mountain Watershed Association pulled about 200 tires (which leak toxic 6PPD) from a four-mile stretch of the Youghiogheny River on Saturday morning to help protect water quality. The group has removed nearly 3,000 tires since 2019 (and plans more cleanups in the spring and fall) to reduce contamination risks to local wildlife.  The Tribune-Review

  • The Steelers are paying $17 million more on their defense than any other NFL team—this spending is designed to meet high expectations in upcoming games.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Pitt beat Central Michigan 45—17 for their second straight home win as quarterback Eli Holstein threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns while Desmond Reid and Raphael Williams Jr. helped the Panthers win. The team will travel to Morgantown to face West Virginia in the renewed Backyard Brawl on Sept. 13.  The Pitt News
