ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire in Arnold killed 39-year-old Shakeeta Murphy and her sister Latecia while four of five people inside were taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital and the three-story home on Kenneth Avenue was destroyed — investigators are still looking into the cause.  KDKA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wegmans got permission to start building its first Pittsburgh-area store when Cranberry Township supervisors approved the land development and conditional use permits on Thursday—permission that will let the store be built along Cool Springs Drive in Cranberry Springs near the Lemieux Sports Complex—and the chain expects to open in 2027.  KDKA

CRIME NEWS

  • Dormont police are searching for 8-year-old Ceanna Silvio who was last seen at Dormont Elementary School wearing a gray unicorn shirt (she wore sandals with straps and her hair was in a ponytail) and they ask anyone with information to call the department immediately.  WPXI
  • A Pittsburgh man — Brian Kellum, 46 — was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering after he stabbed a man multiple times near a North Side bus stop at Cedar Avenue and Pressley Street early Thursday as police treated the critically injured victim before transporting him to Allegheny General Hospital.  The Tribune-Review

  • Sheetz and Sofar Sounds hosted a surprise concert on Aug. 8 at a Sheetz in Robinson Township where the All-American Rejects and local musicians performed to launch the new Sheetzertainment program. The event showcased a fresh approach to live music and marked an innovative effort by the chain.  WPXI
  • Twelve festivals are planned for September in Pittsburgh—offering film, art, food, and Irish cultural events that will bring community members together. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shaler Area School District will start using the OpenGate Weapons Detection System at Titan Stadium this Friday night when the school team hosts the South Fayette Lions game. The district directs fans to enter through the Shopping Center side entrance while event participants use the Library side entrance — small purses are allowed after screening and no reentry policy is enforced to protect student athletes, band, and cheerleaders.  WPXI

  • Rep. Summer Lee hosted a roundtable at Carnegie Mellon's Heinz College on Aug 27 to call for stricter rules on political donations from super PACs—she warned that big money in politics undermines accountability to voters. Panelists from Free Speech for People joined her discussion to stress the need for reforms in campaign finance.  The Pitt News

  • A Pittsburgh-area mom, Deb Smith, started the nonprofit A.J.'s Stop 22 after her veteran son died by suicide on Feb. 24 to help veterans and their families in crisis in Butler County—she has raised over $200,000 to support mental health services.  CBS Pittsburgh
