CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A silver Jaguar sedan stolen in an armed carjacking at a stoplight in Scott Township was recovered in Pittsburgh after a Channel 11 photographer spotted it being towed away. WPXI
- ➤ Pittsburgh Police identified a person of interest in connection with several sexual assaults on the North Side along the East Ohio Street corridor between 1 and 3 a.m. over the past two and a half months—officials warn residents that there may be other victims and advise taking extra precautions while in public. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Pitt School of Education had a busy summer after it released the July PittEd magazine that looked at sports and teaching and named Sharon Ross as interim executive director of the Office of Child Development that helps over 7,000 local children—Ross replaced Shannon Wanless. Dean Eboni Zamani-Gallaher also started a project to train workers for a growing life sciences field with a nearly $498,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation that is expected to create thousands of jobs. - ➤ Klaus Libertus, a professor at Pitt, started his new role as director of the College of General Studies and assistant dean for online education on August 15 — he aims to boost access to quality online courses for adult and non-traditional students by working with various departments. - ➤ Pitt said it will manage tuition discounts on a short-term basis since the state has not yet passed the funding budget, leaving the university to cover the costs formerly shared with the state. Pitt remains hopeful that a $60 million performance-based funding recommendation—pending legislature approval—will support more stable financial aid for its students. University Times
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Allegheny Health Network is offering free respiratory screenings in the Mon Valley today at Duquesne Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the five-minute exams check for COPD in adults and asthma in children and include follow-up consultations. WPXI
