- ➤ The union vice president said that a gas valve at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works was significantly overpressurized with water during a routine flush, causing it to split and release gas that led to a deadly explosion on August 11—damaging batteries, lowering coke oven temperatures, and prompting a temporary workaround to restore heat by Monday while full repairs are expected to take three to four months with no layoffs promised by Nippon Steel.
