ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • U.S. Steel said it found a possible cause for a fatal explosion at its Clairton plant near Pittsburgh that killed two workers during a routine maintenance task on Monday, and it is reviewing video footage and interviewing employees as its investigation remains in the early stages.  PennLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle early Saturday in Pittsburgh’s Uptown area at the intersection of Vine Street and Fifth Avenue in the Bluff neighborhood—officers detained the driver and investigations suggest alcohol may have been a factor.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • National Aviary will launch its fall theme 'Forests Presented by Peoples' on Sept. 3 — featuring autumn decor, daily activities, expert talks and themed habitats inspired by mythical forests and tropical rainforests. Visitors will enjoy special shows like the daily Fantastical Eagle Meet and Greet and interactive play areas during open hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Tuesdays after Sept. 1.  WPXI

  • On Friday, lawmakers and advocates demanded action on the rising SNAP theft crisis—arguing that stolen benefits leave people without money for food—and called on Congress to adopt a new EBT card and reinstate federal reimbursement.  WPXI
  • Gary James was sworn in as Bridgeville’s new police chief at a council meeting — he had worked for over 35 years in the department, starting as a patrolman before becoming a sergeant.  The Tribune-Review

  • Tony Villiotti of Scott Township was diagnosed with a fatty liver in 2005 and now his new liver is giving him a fresh outlook on life—he is learning to manage his health better under his doctor's guidance.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cranberry Township native Laney Potter was named to the 2025 U.S. Collegiate Women's Select Ice Hockey Team by USA Hockey earlier this month. She will compete with the team this season as a rising talent in collegiate ice hockey.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • The Pirates moved veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney to the bullpen for the rest of the season—manager Don Kelly announced Saturday afternoon. Heaney will pitch in relief roles as the team adjusts its strategy for upcoming games.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Aaron Rodgers turned down a richer offer from the Steelers because he just wanted to play ball – former cornerback Bryant McFadden said he chose the original $13.65 million deal. The team now plans to use him to help win a playoff game.  PennLive
