ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials said the second person killed in Monday’s explosion at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works was identified—authorities are investigating the incident.  WPXI

CRIME NEWS

  • FBI Pittsburgh warned that making school-related hoax threats is both a state and federal crime that can result in suspension, expulsion, arrest, or imprisonment — a reminder as students ready for the new school year.  WPXI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A traffic calming project began Thursday on Webster Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where speed humps, splitter islands and painted bump outs were installed to reduce drivers exceeding the 25 mph limit after data showed over 80% were speeding. Flaggers managed traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.—weather permitting.  WPXI
  • All customers in the Township of Robinson are under a boil water notice after a water main break reduced water storage and risk of contamination—repairs are underway and residents are advised to boil water before use.  WPXI
  • Tim Stevens, who founded the Black Political Empowerment Project in 1986, remains active in guiding local voter education as he prepares the next generation from his childhood Hill District roots—his 80th birthday marks decades of political advocacy and community service in Pittsburgh.  NEXTpittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vitalant and the Pittsburgh Pirates are hosting a blood drive series with events on Aug. 26-27 at PNC Park and partner locations. Donors who give blood—especially type O and platelet donors—will receive a voucher for two Pirates game tickets, a $10 gift card, and an entry into a $10,000 giveaway.  WPXI

  • Max Hurleman, a Steelers preseason player known for his standing backflip in high school, attempted the maneuver today after more than a year away—coaches and teammates took note of his effort.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said many top players, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, will not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Buccaneers & he wants to give younger players more time on the field. He said he will decide later if some of the starters may return for the next game against the Panthers.  PennLive
