  • Tarentum’s Horizon Market on Sixth Avenue is filling a food desert by offering locally sourced shrimp, Syrian bread and daily staples at prices lower than big chains—its nearly 15,000 transactions in less than three months have created six jobs and support plans to open two more stores in areas with limited food access.  The Tribune-Review

  • Workers at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh were pushing coke out of ovens when a strong explosion on Monday killed two and injured over 10 — prompting emergency teams to rescue trapped workers and begin investigating the cause.  KDKA
  • U.S. Steel officials released details about moments leading up to an explosion at the Clairton plant that killed 2 and injured 10—neighbors reported hearing two smaller shocks before the blast.  WPXI
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro arrived in Clairton yesterday to meet with U.S. Steel officials—an explosion at a plant killed two and injured at least 10.  CBS Pittsburgh

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh indicted East Hills resident Kelley Oliver-Hollis (61) on 33 counts for healthcare fraud, money laundering, social security fraud and concealing material facts after she allegedly overbilled Pennsylvania Medicaid for SerenityCare services (December 2016 to July 2023) and she faces prison time and fines.  WTAE
  • On August 12th, emergency crews responded at the South Side Marina (2600 block of South Water Street) when a woman's body was found in the Monongahela River; police said she, believed to be in her mid-20s, did not appear to have been in the water long and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner will determine her cause and manner of death.  WPXI

  • Pittsburgh’s City Controller said the ShotSpotter system, which uses sensors to detect gunfire, improved police response times as 911 calls dropped 50% since 2014 — the city’s contract for the system runs through the end of this year and $8.1 million has been spent on it.  WTAE
