A father, Charles Smitley, and his girlfriend, Colleen Cassidy, were charged after a 5-year-old boy was found emaciated and with bruises in Westmoreland County in April when his grandfather took him to a hospital—court documents said the boy reported being spanked with a paddle and tied to a chair—while police investigate the case.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit released a final report showing nearly 5,000 people testified against proposed fare hikes and service cuts as the agency faces a $100 million budget gap for 2026.
