  • Leslie Basilone, a 66-year-old SilverSneakers instructor from Pine, has been named a finalist for the 2025 SilverSneakers Member of the Year Inspiration Award—she is one of five finalists competing through public votes that remain open until Aug. 11.  The Tribune-Review

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A water main break on the 300 block of McCombs Road in Peters Township sent water shooting into the air, buckling the road and reportedly damaging a home — the water has been shut off while officials say it is unclear how many people are affected.  WPXI
  • A homeowner said everyone escaped safely when a fire broke out a little after 1:15 a.m. Friday at a home on the 400 block of Valleyview Drive in O’Hara Township, and multiple fire crews responded while no one needed hospital care.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • A Westmoreland County man and three others face multiple felony charges for allegedly selling guns, fentanyl and heroin to an undercover officer following a months-long investigation by North Huntingdon Township Police Department—controlled buys were coordinated in Monessen, Belle Vernon, Donora and Pittsburgh from March through July.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since 2006, Pittsburgh Youth Leadership has organized long-distance bike rides to mentor kids—participants have logged 600,000 miles riding across the country.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Jen Wirt—the founder of Coral Care—has partnered with local physical, occupational and speech and language specialists to offer in-home help for families with children facing developmental delays ahead of the school year. The service will provide support within one to two weeks to reduce long wait times for needed care.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vitalant is hosting blood drives during August at various sites in Allegheny County—donors who sign up for Vitalant Donor Rewards will receive a $10 gift card and a chance to win one of three $10,000 gift cards. The drives run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 31 to help keep a steady blood supply as summer events increase.  WPXI
  • A study from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center found that the common artificial sweetener sucralose may weaken cancer immunotherapy by disrupting the gut microbiome—reducing T cells that fight tumors. Tests on mice showed that sucralose sped up tumor growth, and researchers will test arginine supplements in future clinical trials—hoping to restore immune function.  WTAE
