An Oakmont man, Daniel Brockhoff, 63, faced multiple charges including felony institutional vandalism after he broke a sprinkler that flooded cells in the Penn Hills Police Department at about 2:30 a.m. on July 26—he is also charged with disorderly conduct, harassment, and public drunkenness with a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 11.
Allegheny County police said that just before 12:30 a.m. today on the 2300 block of Grandview Avenue in McKeesport a man shot a woman and then took his own life—emergency responders treated the woman in critical condition while authorities have not released any identities.
The South Side live music venue Club Café reopens today after closing in January under new owners who promise to keep its small-room performances and update its décor and menu.
The venue will now operate as a bar (5 p.m. to midnight) from Monday to Saturday and shows for tomorrow and Friday are sold out (showing strong local support).
The Public Utility Commission will hold public hearings next month on a proposed rate increase for more than 500,000 Pittsburgh Water customers.
In-person meetings are scheduled on Aug. 12 in the Hill District at 1 p.m. and in Hazelwood at 6 p.m., while telephone hearings are set for Aug. 13; the utility is asking for a 33 percent increase that will raise the average residential bill from $100 to $123 next year and to $135 in 2027.
The owners of Pittsburgh Mills Mall were ordered to pay nearly $2 million in fines for dozens of maintenance violations after a July 17 hearing where an attorney pleaded guilty to 36 citations—further hearings on 364 additional citations are set for Aug.
21. This ruling follows citations issued by the Frazer Building Inspector in April and May and a criminal investigation by the District Attorney.
