CRIME NEWS

  • Thursday evening, a man arrived at a Pittsburgh hospital with a gunshot graze to his head and was reported stable while police responded at 7:30 p.m. to shots fired and a fight at a Spring Hill-City View home where another man with head lacerations refused treatment.  WTAE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Recent economic announcements show strong growth ahead for Pittsburgh. Developer Lucas Piatt said the first phase of his $740 million Esplanade project is weeks away—Walnut Capital won City Council approval for a $500 million Bakery Square expansion while Senator Nick Pisciottano introduced a tax incentive bill for Mon Valley development.  KDKA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt announced a new Mobile Panther ID that lets students, staff & faculty use smartphones to access campus buildings, dining halls and library checkouts while reducing the need for plastic cards. Users can set up the digital credential quickly, but will use their traditional card as backup until the system is fully activated later this summer.  University Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pitt Sustainability reported that its FY24 greenhouse gas inventory showed a 37.3% drop from its 2008 baseline, putting the University on track to meet a 50% reduction goal by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2037 while nearly doubling renewable electricity on campus rooftops—officials confirmed this progress. The University also won its second Lodestar Award for solar installations and is offering free 30-minute POGOH bike rides until July 31—supporting active commuting.  University Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit will detour the P68-Braddock Hills Flyer from Monday until October as PennDOT starts a road reconstruction along Main Street in East Pittsburgh—several stops on Main Street, Brinton Avenue, and Pallas Street will not be served, while free shuttles help riders transfer to connecting routes on weekday and weekend schedules.  WPXI
  • Yesterday, Senator Dave McCormick and Senator John Fetterman, along with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, toured the U.S. Steel Edgar Thomson Works Plant in Braddock to see how the U.S. Steel—Nippon Steel deal affected plant workers and the surrounding community. The agreement finalized in June includes an $11 billion investment through 2028 with a focus on U.S. management and production.  WTAE

  • On July 25, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and St. Padre Pio Parish sold the former St. Joseph Church property at 4712 Liberty Ave in Bloomfield to Arch Masonry Real Estate LLC for $1.15 million—marking a major step in divesting their key property holdings after demolishing the old Immaculate Conception church property between Liberty and Friendship Avenues.  WPXI
