- ➤ After weeks of heavy rain, Venture Outdoors opened its new Downtown Dock on the Allegheny River on Friday, June 13—featuring a 100-by-50-foot floating facility with four kayak launches including one ADA-compliant launch. The dock, located near the Convention Center, offered a variety of kayak rentals and will expand in 2026 with plans for a boathouse that includes educational opportunities. NEXTpittsburgh
- ➤ Pittsburgh mascots will race go-karts at Three Rivers Karting Entertainment Park in Leetsdale on Thursday, July 24th at 8:30 p.m.—the race will take place during halftime of a championship—and free admission lets fans vote for their favorite mascot’s chosen charity until 7 p.m. WPXI
- ➤ Ginette Conover’s dog, Penny, went missing on Dec. 3 and was not seen for 34 days until volunteers, flyers, and a drone search helped locate her near John J. Kane Regional Center, and she is now healthy with only a few ticks. Ginette and her husband Kevin said they are very thankful for the community help—neighbors worked together to bring Penny home. - ➤ The board of governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education approved tuition rates for the 2025-26 school year with in‑state tuition rising by $139 per semester to $3,997 and full‑year tuition increasing by $278 after a seven‑year freeze—PASSHE is asking for a 6.5% state appropriation increase that may reverse the hike if more funding is provided, affecting local institutions such as PennWest California, PennWest Clarion, IUP and Slippery Rock University.
