CULTURE NEWS

  • Researchers from Juniata College led by Jonathan Burns announced Friday at the Fort Ligonier Center for History Education that over 300 items—including uniform buttons and a French watch key—were uncovered at a Ligonier site where a friendly fire incident occurred on November 12. The dig continues under an agreement with local property owners to document this important episode in George Washington’s military career.  The Tribune-Review

  • A small lithium-ion battery began to smoke in a garbage truck on Friday—Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department reminded residents to dispose of batteries properly to prevent fire hazards.  WPXI

  • On Friday, the Allegheny County Health Department announced that West Nile Virus was detected in multiple neighborhoods.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Allegheny County health officials reported Friday that mosquito samples from Wilkinsburg, Schenley Park, Mt. Washington, Beltzhoover, Mt. Oliver and Hazelwood tested positive for West Nile Virus. Residents are advised to use repellent and cover up—especially at dusk—and remove stagnant water to reduce breeding sites.  WTAE
