BUSINESS NEWS

  • Anthrocon is expected to bring over 20,000 visitors downtown this weekend and generate an estimated $21.7 million for local businesses—boosting hotel bookings and restaurant visits—and support local charity efforts.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Police are investigating the overnight fatal shooting of a boy aged 16 in the Hill District — they were alerted by ShotSpotter — and the case remains under review.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Pittsburgh police responded at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Craft Avenue in Oakland where they found a woman with a gunshot wound to her chest—she was taken to the hospital in critical condition while an investigation continues.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Pittsburgh will see the Roberto Clemente Bridge close today at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. July 14 and the Andy Warhol Bridge close today, reopening at 9 a.m. July 15, with detours posted. The Picklesburgh festival runs Friday through Sunday + it is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Water CEO Will Pickering and Chief Engineering Officer Rachael Beam detailed a massive upgrade program that will invest $500 million over the next 5 to 7 years—replacing century-old components and accelerating lead service line removals—to ensure safe drinking water for about half a million people. The utility will host the One Water Summit this week to show water authorities nationwide how these improvements enhance local water quality.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Glimmer of Hope and St. Clair Hospital in the South Hills are now offering portable scalp cooling therapy—helping breast cancer patients lessen hair loss during chemotherapy. The free treatment is available to those whose insurance does not cover it and has helped over a thousand patients.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • On July 6, the Mariners beat the Pirates 1-0 as Ben Williamson hit an RBI double in the sixth inning and Luis Castillo pitched seven strong innings, striking out eight.
