- ➤ On June 12th, Pittsburghers and local officials gathered at Garfield as Evolve Coaching broke ground on a new Inclusion Center designed to serve the city's autistic and disabled residents. The three-story center at 5025 Penn Ave will open in 2026 and feature meeting spaces, an independent living training floor, a media center + a public art gallery, with $1.5 million in state redevelopment funds supporting the renovations. - ➤ The Children’s Institute in Squirrel Hill announced Monday it will spend millions to transform its outdoor playground so children, families, and community partners can use the fully accessible space designed for ages 2—21 to enjoy sensory and physical benefits. - ➤ One teenager died in Crafton Heights on Monday afternoon after a shooting — another teen is facing gun charges after being seen fleeing the scene. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- ➤ Charles A. Richardson, the former IT manager at Heinz Endowments, was indicted on June 17 for alleged wire fraud and money laundering involving nearly $1 million embezzlement—he managed IT operations while using a self-owned vendor to submit fraudulent invoices and is now free on bond. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Allegheny County officials extended the Code Red Heat Advisory through Friday as dangerous heat continues. They kept county cooling centers open (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and expanded overnight shelter for homeless adults on Tuesday and Wednesday nights while Pittsburgh city officials also lengthened cooling center hours as temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees. - ➤ Thousands of Pittsburgh Regional Transit riders spoke out against planned service cuts—saying the changes will reduce service reliability—and urged transit officials to review community feedback before finalizing the proposal. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- ➤ Mayor Ed Gainey introduced a pilot program today that streamlines buying city-owned homes by clearing titles before marketing them—titles for five properties in four neighborhoods are ready, and the program is open to residents earning up to 120% of the area's median income who agree to live in the home for at least five years.
