COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, Pittsburgh leaders celebrated a new project in Larimer where the Land Bank and Habitat for Humanity built two three-bedroom homes to clear blight and provide affordable housing for first-time buyers. The project uses volunteer work and a 30-year, 0% interest rate loan—state powers help clear properties quickly—to boost local homeownership.  WTAE
  • Greater Pittsburgh Cake4Kids delivered its 100th cake about a year after it started—marking a milestone as it plans to support more community events.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Today the Davis Avenue Bridge reopened after being closed for a decade in Brighton Heights, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to cross safely to Riverview Park over an 80-foot span on Woods Run Avenue—restoring a much-needed link for local residents. Local officials say the multi-million dollar project was funded by several sources and has already improved community access.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • The man accused of killing Jennah Seibert in Rostraver Township will stand trial on criminal homicide and other charges after his fiancée testified she found Seibert dead in their bed in a pool of blood when he returned from work on April 11 — he was arrested in Florida for pawning stolen items and had faced earlier robbery charges that were dismissed on June 4.  KDKA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hempfield supervisors approved asking the manager and solicitor to explore a one-year extension to the County Hauling contract for garbage collection, saying it would offer maintained service and cost savings. Manager Aaron Siko explained the move follows a review of similar rates in other townships and includes a 3% rate increase—board members will now further assess the renewal option before the contract expires at the end of 2025.  The Tribune-Review
  • Citizen, a public safety app that alerts residents about local incidents, is now available in Pittsburgh—officials question the source and accuracy of its data. Pittsburgh Public Safety said they will study the app further—concerns include unverified information and the risks of live updates during emergencies.  WTAE
  • Allegheny County will activate a Code Red Heat Advisory starting Sunday, June 22 until Wednesday as the National Weather Service and CDC predict severe heat—cooling centers in Pittsburgh and nearby neighborhoods will open with extended hours while officials reach out to older adults, children, and people experiencing homelessness.  WPXI
