COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two local postal workers—Tony Kriley and Jamie Stevens—were honored on Thursday with the Postmaster General Hero Award for rescuing 74-year-old Air Force veteran and foster grandmother Janice Taylor from a dog attack on March 6th, and Taylor said she believed she would not have survived without their help.  WTAE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 125th U.S. Open in Oakmont is set to boost the regional economy as more than 200,000 visitors are expected this weekend, driving increased activity from player practices to extended planning by the USGA. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will pick up leftover food on June 17—food that will be given to local families in need.  KDKA
  • The Westmoreland County Food Bank, which served 5.8 million meals last year, faces a $250,000 budget cut—USDA pulled funding as officials plan a SNAP overhaul.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rachel Carson Bridge in downtown Pittsburgh will close for inspection starting Monday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday and will close again the following week for the same hours (traffic will be detoured via Fort Duquesne Boulevard, Andy Warhol Bridge, and Isabella Street).  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allegheny Health Network will spend $6.2 million to expand services at Allegheny Valley Hospital and Forbes Hospital—doubling the rehab unit at Allegheny Valley and converting Forbes’ unit into 20 new medical-surgical beds to help with busy patient flow. Construction at Allegheny Valley will begin in July and finish by year-end while Forbes’s changes will start soon.  WPXI

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Oakmont Country Club, a team of meteorologists uses Thor Guard’s lightning prediction system to help keep fans, golfers, caddies, and volunteers safe during the US Open week. Chief meteorologist Jake Swick works with the USGA to issue weather warnings—covering heat, wind, and lightning—that may suspend play if conditions become dangerous.  WTAE
  • At the Steelers minicamp, coach Eddie Faulkner said rookie running back Kaleb Johnson needs to work on pass protection but shows promise in spotting dangerous players on the field—he said Johnson may compete for the starting role if he keeps improving.  PennLive
  • At minicamp, the Steelers reported no injuries that will slow them down at training camp on July 24—tight end Donald Parham, who tore his Achilles during OTAs, is on injured reserve while coach Mike Tomlin said he is still talking with T.J. Watt about his contract.  PennLive
