COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hill Community Development Corporation will use a $1M state grant to revitalize the historic New Granada Building on Centre Avenue in the Hill District. The project will improve facades and add community spaces as part of Pennsylvania's Main Street Matters program.  The Tribune-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Pride Guide lists over 40 events this week from June 4 to 7 featuring parades, drag shows, dance parties and music festivals. Locals can join celebrations at venues like 5801 Video Lounge, the National Aviary and downtown river crossings — a festive showcase of inclusivity.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Heinz History Center is expanding its footprint with an $80 million project that will add a Museum of African American History and a cultural plaza. Construction began on April 30 and will finish in 2028 (adding 92,000 sqft) to enrich Pittsburgh's local narrative.  Pittsburgh City Paper
  • Thousands of people attended the RiverLife Chalk Fest on the North Shore this past weekend, where over two dozen mural artists painted unique chalk murals along streets (from Isabella Street to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail) and offered spaces for kids to make their own art.  Pittsburgh City Paper
  • Butcher and the Rye, a James Beard Award-nominated whiskey bar, is set to reopen at 212 Sixth Street in the Cultural District on Wednesday, July 8. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt’s PRSSIM project uses pre-college programs, mentoring and paid internships to help rural students succeed + a free Professional Development Day for rural success is scheduled for October at regional campuses.  University Times
  • Bill Yates proposed a new non-binding authorship resolution process for Pitt researchers that starts with self-resolution and, if needed, involves a neutral advisory committee (composed of faculty and trainees) to offer written guidance.  University Times
  • Staff Council invites Pitt staff to apply for the Frisch Staff Professional Development Award that funds approved courses, workshops, and conferences. Applications open until June 13 (review begins on July 20 and winners are notified the week of Aug. 10) and require at least one year of employment.  University Times
  • Pittsburgh Public Schools approved a plan to close and consolidate schools amid strong community debate. Officials will hold public meetings soon to discuss how the changes will affect students and families.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House passed House Bill 2254 (Ryan's Law) on Monday with a bipartisan 174-27 vote to allow terminally ill patients access to medical marijuana. The bill now moves to the Senate and could offer more choices for patients to remain conscious during care.  WPXI
  • Overnight lane closures on I-279 near the Jacks Run Bridge in Ross Township will begin today from 7 p.m. until 3 p.m. tomorrow, while a full 25-day closure on Parkway East for the Commercial Street Bridge project is planned next month.  WPXI
