COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trail organizers are preparing for summer with repairs and community events across Southwestern Pennsylvania. In Murrysville, the Westmoreland Heritage Trail fixed storm damage and will host a festival June 6 at B-Y Park; Apollo and North Hills also are upgrading trails (including a new covered bridge) to improve access.  The Tribune-Review
  • Bethel Park police temporarily hired a lost Plymouth Rock chicken after a short foot pursuit on Drake Road on Sunday. The feathered recruit was briefly used to direct traffic and will be returned to her home (per a police statement).  WTAE
  • The nonprofit Mainstay helps residents with intellectual disabilities live independently with dedicated support staff; KDKA's Megan Shinn featured their work on KD Sunday Spotlight.  CBS Pittsburgh

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joe Negri, the celebrated jazz guitarist (known for his role on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) died Saturday of natural causes, days before his 100th birthday on June 10. His legacy lives on through Negri’s Music Shop and decades-long contributions to Pittsburgh’s arts scene.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools was awarded a three-year fellowship with the News Literacy Project, earning $30,000 to integrate news literacy education districtwide. District officials say the program will help students learn to spot credible information.  WPXI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A water main break closed Hillman Street at Brownsville Road outside the Brentwood Police Station Sunday, officials said. Crews are repairing the break and drivers are advised to use alternate routes until repairs are completed.  WTAE

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • LadderUp Housing got a $250,000 boost from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to buy and fix new homes in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The funding will let the company use its rent-to-homeownership plan to help more local families prepare for owning a home.  WPXI
  • Fox Chapel real estate saw several deals beginning May 31; Gary DeFrancesco sold 2509 Middle Road for $325,000, O’Hara Estate sold 591 Dorseyville Road for $150,000, and a Sharpsburg property at 1216 Penn St. sold for $255,000, according to RealSTATs.  The Tribune-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Twins with a win (9-3) at PNC Park on May 31, and Braxton Ashcraft capped off a strong month with an impressive start on the mound.  WPXI
  • The Pirates returned Ryan O’Hearn today while Konnor Griffin was placed on the injured list for at least 10 days after he connected with a pitch in a Saturday game at PNC Park. The moves set up roster adjustments for upcoming matches.  WPXI
  • Steelers running back Rico Dowdle signed with the team last week after his mother predicted his move weeks before he committed. Dowdle now adds his talent to the squad as he begins this new phase in Pittsburgh.  WPXI
  • On Sunday, May 31, the Pirates hosted their annual Pitch for Hope Women’s Baseball Clinic at PNC Park — the event for 150 women featured brunch, a game ticket, a recognition ceremony and an on-field clinic to benefit Glimmer of Hope.  WPXI
