COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mars Area Public Library will soon use a $10,000 grant from the American Library Association to improve access for people with vision challenges by adding new large print books (using 30% of the funds) and assistive technology such as magnifiers and Playaway audio devices. The library also plans to partner with local senior centers to supply additional magnifiers to readers.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • US Customs officers at Pittsburgh International Airport intercepted 54 pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed packages from a London-bound flight and arrested a Massachusetts woman, Jetta Monet Corbett, on May 24— the drugs are valued at about $240,000 and might be worth more in Europe due to their potency.  WPXI
  • Today, a school van driver in Pittsburgh admitted he drank alcohol before crashing into another vehicle on the north side of the 15th Street Bridge and fleeing the scene, with six children calling their parents who then notified 911 — Mount Oliver Police later tracked the van at the intersection of Becks Run Road — Wagner Street.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tree of Life received a $2.5 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation on May 30 to support plans for a national center that will educate, remember, and build bridges for Jewish culture. The funding now brings the nonprofit's total investment to $3.5 million as it builds on last year's groundbreaking in Squirrel Hill.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Friday events kickstarted Pittsburgh’s Pride festivities with a prom and a ball at QMNTY Center, while tomorrow’s parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Liberty Avenue and finish at Allegheny Commons West Park—organizers plan over 300 vendor booths, free live music, and heavy police support with Mayor Ed Gainey set to participate to keep the celebration safe.  WTAE
  • June in Pittsburgh offers a busy lineup of events from festivals and markets to arts and sports competitions.
