GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pittsburgh City Council extended Police Chief Marty Devine's acting role until February — leaving the final appointment decision to the incoming mayor — as the city prepares for a leadership change. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
- ➤ Allegheny County has launched the state’s first mobile competency restoration clinic—designed to treat individuals with mental or behavioral challenges so they can receive care quickly instead of languishing in jail. County officials said the program will serve Allegheny County while a new court docket for competency cases will debut next month and similar initiatives are being considered in Bucks and Delaware Counties. - ➤ Since Tuesday morning, PennDOT restricted lanes in the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on Parkway East and heavy backups formed on a road that normally carries 100,000 vehicles per day. PennDOT said the lane restrictions, including plans to close the Squirrel Hill ramp to eastbound traffic and shift lanes next week, will last for the rest of this week and next while work on the outbound bridge will begin in late July (a new bridge is planned for next summer with work continuing until summer 2027). - ➤ Local emergency physicians report that medetomidine, a veterinary sedative, is showing up in street drugs and causing severe withdrawal symptoms that lead to intensive care admissions.
